SAT Scores... Help me out.

Ok, I just got my SAT scores, first time I took them. I got 550 verbal and 510 math. What does that mean? good? bad? average?

Are you registerd on collegeboard.com? If you are, you can get your scores there, and I believe it gives you the overall percentile of how you stack up to everybody else in the country that took the same test. Otherwise, "good" is all about who you are and what your goals are. When I got a 1260 the first time I worked my arse off to try and improve it, becacuse I knew I could do better. I'm fairly satisfied with my 1380 now, so I guess I would consider that "good" for me. For one of my best friends, he was ecstatic to break 1000 on his second try. "Good" for you is being able to do what you want to do.

I'm working from memory here, and I know SAT tests have changed since I took them about 15 years ago... so please bear with me.

I believe you get 200 on the math and 200 on the verbal just for taking the test. Max score is 800 on each part. An average score is 500 on each part. I took the SATs a couple of times... blew the math out of the water every time and did nicely on the verbal.

Don't they have some sort of essay section now on the SAT? Back when I took it, it was all multiple choice.

If you're looking at colleges, take a look at their average SAT scores for previous years' freshman classes. That will give you some idea of what that college is expecting for admission.

The info you received about your score should include percentiles comparing your scores to everyone else's...

As for it being good or not...what's the average score for incoming freshman at the college you want to go to?

you add em together so you got a 1060. it all depends on what your goals are.

im pretty sure now you should be getting a score out of 2400...800 more for an essay you write.

as to whether its good, now that depends on where you want to go to college. if you want to go to harvard, you may be in a little trouble. if you want to go to sand hills community college...you might be shooting too low. its your world... you get to define good and bad

The essay portion has not gone into effect yet, just to clear that up. It will start either this spring or next fall, I believe. I know these things, we're getting all this info crammed down our throats day after day, being a senior in high school. *sigh*

I don't believe the new SAT wwith the essay is being used quite yet. I may be wrong, however

New SAT hasn't started yet. Your score isn't bad but its not that great (no offense), most reputable colleges want to see something around 1200.

Funny, I never took it. Don't know why either. The college I went to didn't require it if you were in the top quarter (I was).

Wish I had though, curious what I would have gotten.

Essay is not in effect yet.

a 1060 or whatever you got is not bad but its not great....i'd said if you got in the 1100's you'd be a litle above average. I'm happy with my 1250 and it's got me into private and public schools so far. I just got acceptance from U of Oregon and Willamette! w00t

WHoever said they stress the ACT more I think it is more a regional thing because in NC most of my colleges only seem to care about my SAT scores. My 1420 got me into UNC charlotte in a week, but I am still waiting for chapel hill and nc state to get back to me.
