Whats the deal with simple spelling?

I guess i'm from the old generation when it meant something to take pride in knowing how a word is spelled. Our current generation, for the most part, has been assaulted by "quick fixes" for words too long to spell for an instant message or emails. The advent of word processing has destroyed our ability to even write in a legible manner. Poor Roguefactor has to deal with a constant barrage of "Hey Rouge great whatever." For a society supposedly so advanced how can we be so backwards? Its disgusting.

I propose a resolution for this upcoming year. All members of AO dedicate themselves to the simple task of making an effort with their spelling. Its not that hard really. I'm not perfect. I screw stuff up all the time but at least I try. Can we, as a community, at least give literacy a chance? Come on people lets make an effort to improve ourselves.

I do my absolute best to use the best spelling and grammer that I can. I just always get mixed up when words have two of the same letters. I end up doubling the wrong letter.
Hey, look at that! It's Santa!

i try to spell everything correctly, and use the proper punctuation, but i never capitalize anything. capitalization just takes too long in my opinion, but at least my posts are readable.

Well I guess it is more of getting your point across then trying to show intelligence on a forum of mostly teenagers.

Of all the people that should be most careful are our teenagers. It is the current generation who could use this to their advantage. It seems that the younger people try so hard to be taken seriously only to have their poor spelling and grammer bring them down. The future leaders of this country should be the ones trying their hardest. Taking shortcuts only adds to the problem. How long does it really take to hit the "shift" key to capitalize a word when you type? Come on guys and gals, make an effort because it makes a difference.

Misconstrued is a good start. It doesn't hurt to have a dictionary handy for reference. Crack one open sometime people its scary what we might learn.

when im on a message board, the shift key is not something that i care to use. in any type of school assignment, i type perfectly (i could even hand write it, but that takes too long). when on a message board, or using instant messagers, its not that consiquential to use capitalization. i am a teenager by the way.

While I agree with your post, I have a problem with people (read: institutions) who cater to the stupid, lazy, and apathetic. What was once poor grammar is now accepted simply because of widespread use. For example, it is now acceptable to begin a sentence with a conjunction.

Capitalization takes too long? WHAT?! Pressing the "Shift" key along with another keystroke takes too long? How stupid, lazy, and apathetic do you have to be to believe that drivel? What else takes too long? Showering? Wiping your butt? I know sex isn't on the list, but at least you can take a pill for that.

If past behavior is indicative of future behavior, it's even going to take too long for you to shake your cup of change!

its a message board... capitalization isnt the most important thing in the world. why do you care if im lazy or not? in 5 or 6 years i will most likely be making more money than you, so its no skin off my back if you feel like ridiculing me for being apathetic and lazy.

Because your not the only one who thinks that way; and the more people you see 'taking it easier', the less important it appears to be.

I disagree with the attitude that it should be perfect. I have taken an interest in reading old court rulings, especially during the gold rush. The judges were barely literate in most cases, it did not make them any less intelligent. As long as I can understand what is being said in a post I do not have a problem with it. If I have to work to understand it, thats another story. This is not some important document that needs to be perfect, and it is more important to get the point across then to have perfect grammar in my opinion.

I'm not asking for perfection just an attempt at being literate. The beautiful thing about progress is that we can analyze the mistakes of the past and improve on them. Instead of progressing our language seems to be in regression. It was never my intention to slam anyone regarding this subject and I ask everyone who reads this to refrain from doing so. If you disagree thats fine. If you can offer some encouragement then please do.

acecl22 this has nothing to do with how much money anyone is going to make in the future. I have recently returned to school with the hopes of one day becoming a teacher. I'm not doing it for money but because its what I feel I can do well. While personal wealth can solve a lot of problems it can create just as many so keep that in perspective. I wish you well in whatever venture you take on in your future.
