10 year old gets arrested for scissors

Girl, 10, Cuffed for Scissors in School

Sat Dec 11, 4:03 PM ET U.S. National - AP

PHILADELPHIA - A 10-year-old girl was placed in handcuffs and taken to a police station because she took a pair of scissors to her elementary school.

School district officials said the fourth-grade student did not threaten anyone with the 8-inch shears, but violated a rule that considers scissors to be potential weapons.

Administrators said they were following state law when they called police Thursday, and police said they were following department rules when they handcuffed Porsche Brown and took her away in a patrol wagon.

"My daughter cried and cried," said her mother, Rose Jackson. "She had no idea what she did was wrong. I think that was way too harsh."

Police officers decided the girl hadn't committed a crime and let her go.

However, school officials suspended her for five days. Administrators will decide at a hearing whether she may return to class, or be expelled to a special disciplinary school.

The scissors were discovered while students' belongings were being searched for property missing from a teacher's desk.

School district officials have promised a crackdown on unruly students this year, and new policies give administrators the power to expel students for infractions as minor as violating the dress code, chronic tardiness or habitual swearing.

Administrators say the steps are needed to regain control over a notoriously unruly school system, but some parents have complained that discipline has been overly harsh and that school officials have been too quick to call police about minor problems.

All I can say is WTF. In my english class these are required materials.

      They shoulda tasered her.

In all seriousness though, that is so incredibly stupid it boggles the mind. I could easily see one of my children doing the same exact thing, with the most innocent of intentions. I would be incredibly pissed off at the school and the police. To make matters worse, they are considering expelling her? Gimme a break!

better stop bringing my pencil since I "could" stab someone with it, thus making it a weapon. On a seperate note, I know its for the good of everyone, but I hate knowing theat I have no rights once I enter my school.

i had a friend walk outside of school one day and found a scalpel(sp) from the biology lab outside on the ground, he wrapped it up in a napkin he had and put it in his inside coat pocket beause the high school is right next to a middle school and he didnt want any kids to get it.

he forgot he had it in the coat, and it remained inside of it for a year. he came to school one day and then he was pulled out of class and they searched his locker. sure enough they find the knife in his coat and suspended him and threatened him with expulsion.

now the funny thing is, is that they searched his stuff because someone told a teacher that he had a knife. how they knew he had it if he didnt know he had it boggles me. but in that school district, they have a policy so that basically anybody that tells on somebody else get $50 cash.

now i know this guy, and im a leader in his boyscout troop. i know he wouldnt do anything as stupid as bringing the knife intentionally. but its messed up how someone knew he had it.

*funny thing is though, that the middle school next to that high school(which my little brother goes to now) has stated in their rule book that knifes are allowed but the blade has to be under 3.5 inches. but no knives are allowed at highschool......

Seems a little excessive to haul her away in cuffs. It's not like a 10 year old is gonna fight back. She's got a wierd name, Porsche Brown.

I had the same thing in my school with the knives. We were allowed to have knives, but if the blade was over 3 inches, it had to be exposed. You had to wear it on your belt or something. Right before I moved to the school, they outlawed guns. You could have a gun in your truck so you could go hunt after school, or before.

                    That's just crazy.
I accidently brought a knife to school once, I just forgot that it was in my backpack. Another kid was going through backpacks looking for money, found it and told the teacher. He just took it and gave it back to me at the end of the day.

                              Wow, is that even allowed???

I accidentally brought my 2 inch wide swiss army knife (with serrated blades, magnifying glass, compass, EVERYTHING) to 5th grade one time and it fell out of my pocket during PE, all that happened was the teacher looked at it and said "I'm going to pretend I didn't see that..." and that was it.
