My Buck pocket knife has always worked great, and the blade locks.

I make great use out of my folding Karambit at work. I have yet to use for a purpose of self defense...

i'd hate to get cut by one of them, its not just a cut, its a gash.

it would be really nice for work though, self-defense and killing boxes and opening stuff that is otherwise a PITA.

I have very strict rules about my everyday pocketknife:

1: <$50 (because pocketknives get lost)
2: linerlock (for one handed closing
3: half serrated, half smooth edge (versatility)
4: the thumbstud must be the round disk that sits atop the blade (I'm left-handed)

the best knife I ever saw that met these requirements was called the "safari". it was basically a cheap knockoff of the S&W SWAT knife, without the stupid teflon coating (looks cool, wears off, costs too much, and you dont' cook eggs on a knife).

I lost it, and I'm not sure it's even made anymore, so i'm still looking for a good replacment.

          ;-(

Kershaw!! I've got one of their "Ken Onion" line, and it rocks socks. Had it for about 5 years now, it's been nothing but wonderful. Picked it up for around $60, and I've never regretted it.

I never go ant place without my Swiss Army (Victorinox) Champ. Yeah, it's not as "cool" as a Benchmade, etc.., but I use the hell out of it.

Gerber, buck, Kershaw, right now I am playing with the Kershaw ken onion, you know how long it took me to find out just how sharp is was? 1 min, it cuts deep and clean, it is one of those knives, where it didnt even hurt, barely felt it. Good knife, and it is a legal switch blade. It fits your requirments of the thumb thingie being on both sides, but you wont need you use it, just press the handy dandy button on the back. Awesome knife.

You have to give us a price range, we can recommend some great knives if you're looking to spend $200+.

I have a Kershaw whirlwind (I think it's ken onion) with the assisted opening. Its a decent knife, stays sharp. Although I showed it to a cop friend and he told me it was illigle even though they sell them at sports authority, galians, and the local gun store. I think it's technically legal because it doesn't open with a button but a lot of cops will call it a switchblade and you may need a lawyer to get out of it. I don't carry it around with me for that reason.
I also have a Gerber Gator which is a nice knife, a little harder to keep a blade on but the blade is thicker, also you need two hands for opening and closeing, I keep that one in the tackle box.

I have a few Kershaws right now and I'm happy with them. The torsion spring finally broke in my 1500ST, so to replace it, it's just a 15min drive to the company.

I'll try some Benchmades soon. They are also about a 15min drive away from home. :)

I'm looking for a knife myself. Needs a pocket clip, non-serrated blade, and easy to open/close with 1 hand. Got ~$50 for it. Been looking at the CRKT M16's. Any other suggestions?
