Yes and yes. It's doable, but hard to learn. And you need the right equipment. It's also really really cool if you get it right.

I already posted it. There is also the endura which is scaled up, might be considered better for defense. Also if I wanted a knife that would cut boxes, burlap bags, some carpet, rope (including climbing ropes), and possibly defending myslelf (I work in DC) - what would you recommend? Needs to be water proof too.
Throwing knives is fun, and not that hard, but has absolutel no practical use.Comment

Typically they use a surgical scalpel.Originally posted by nippinoutI'm not familiar with the Jewish religion, but what do they use for a bris? Could I use a sword?
Had the mohel came at my son with a sword there would have been....fisticuffs.Return to the free market. Get rid of all government regulations and let society make it's own decisions. Time and again the relaxing of government regulations has increased profits, innovation and the economy.Comment

Kershaw makes quite decent knives, though in my experience they've been one of those "expect it to break and don't get to upset about it" brands.
As a clarification, I don't mean break as in the blade snapping, but perhaps an issue with the scales, a chip/dent/bend in the edge of the blade, a faulty action, etc.
Stone sharpening, all the way. However, there is a bit of a learning curve with that. Kitchens are lacking without something along the lines of this: Amazon linkOriginally posted by HexisNow, what do folks like for sharpening systems/methods?
My kitchen knives are Henckels, and they've yet to let me down. And yeah, I use my 10" knife for everything too :)Such a sham(e).Comment

Being a big dork and all, I put together a visual list of what I have (in my kitchen):
I have a nice steel, but that's for honeing, not for sharpening. They are different tasks.Comment

cool, thanks for the response :) I got it for free and rarely use it, so was just wondering.Originally posted by tscKershaw makes quite decent knives, though in my experience they've been one of those "expect it to break and don't get to upset about it" brands.

Thanks for including me here.
Here's my newest carrying knife, on me everyday.
Sharp as hell and quite cool.
In my book, you can't go wrong with Spydercos (good brand with lots of knives, you'll find one you like), Emersons, Striders and a few other brands. Buy a good knife now, not a cheap convenience store one. Like buying a Mag over a VL gun.

ok so what if I want a folding knife for under 50 dollars what do you reccomend. It has to have a little button on the thumb and be able to flip out really fast and not break or get loose after lots of flipping. good blade quality would be nice too because I hate sharpening. Serrated edge doesnt matter.
any reccomendations?
