Leave that SIG as is. I know quite a few who would kill for a DAO P226. It looks great.
Going through the CMP, you should be able to get a Springfield Armory Service Grade for $500. Not a bad deal:I was looking at getting a Garand, but I think I'll go with an M1A (read: M14). I dont like the stripper clips, I'd rather have a box mag.
Danish and Greek issue a bit cheaper.
I've been quite pleased with my CMP Winchester Garand (c1943) and my father's Springfield Garand (c1942).
If you like compact firepower, you might investigate one of these (HK51B):

The most fun I have had with a pistol was my IPSC 9x21 - capacity was around 22 rds, had a 40mm red dot sight. About as practical as the .44 mag.Originally posted by Steelrat

Since we're KIND of on the topic of revolvers, here is my baby.
Taurus Total Titainium 627

The only major parts on this gun that aren't Titainium are the barrel and cylinder sleeves, hammer, trigger, and extraction assembly. Guess how much it weighs unloaded. Come on, guess. Okay...19 oz. Yeah. 7 shots of .357 is enough to discourage pretty much anything.
