iPod worth having? Microsoft thinks so.

"About 80 percent of Microsoft employees who have a portable music player have an iPod," said one source, a high-level manager who asked to remain anonymous. "It's pretty staggering."

The source estimated 80 percent of Microsoft employees have a music player -- that translates to 16,000 iPod users among the 25,000 who work at or near Microsoft's corporate campus. "This irks the management team no end," said the source.

So popular is the iPod, executives are increasingly sending out memos frowning on its use.

Yeah, management should be pissed. They should be buying the microsoft mp3 player. Oh wait, they don't have one...

Contrary to popular belief, Microsoft gets along very well with Apple. Microsoft, in fact, invested in Apple during a very dark period for Apple, and makes a good amount of popular software for the Apple platform.

            no.

If that be the case, seems pretty uncharacteristic for a 64-bit AMD chip to be the only chip that works with 64-bit Windows.

Microsoft used to make alot of gaming hardware.. joysticks, gamepads, etc. They stopped donig that, and only make mice and keyboards now.

erm, xbox, peripherals. Used to do a bit more. MS developed the wma formatting for use in third party media players, i.e. Creative, Dell, whoever else.

btw, I totally didn't refresh, and double posted your link in other thread. alas.

WMA is SOFTware. Everything else is contracted out. My point was that microSOFT is in the SOFTware business where as Apple is in a wide range of the computer market most especially the comercial/industrial market and looks for an outlet in any form they can. Hell they had to build their own computers just so they could run their OS. or vice a virsa

The point of the article is that the iPod does not use the WMA software like so many other players do. Microsoft is not saying that their employees should be using a MS MP3 player (as stated earlier, MS does not offer one) but they should at least be purchasing a WMA player.

The numbers are quite daunting. The iPod accounts for 65% of the mp# player market and the iStore sells 70% of all online music sold.

                      That's tremendous market share.

A sfor MS "getting along" with Apple, yeah, they may have invested in Apple but there are definiate rivalries between similar channels in MS and Apple. Most notably, the mp3 arena.
Return to the free market. Get rid of all government regulations and let society make it's own decisions. Time and again the relaxing of government regulations has increased profits, innovation and the economy.

                          Super. You forgot:

Marketing. Essentially 100% of all agencies are Mac-based for creative. The Adobe suite is optimized for OSX.

Filmmaking: Mac + Final Cut Pro = independant film. LOTR used Macs both for production and, actually, they used a 4g iPod to carry the final theatrical cut.

Audio Recording: Garage Band? kthxbye. Even better programs available, and Mac based.

Game Design: Yup, even MS uses Macs for gaming software development.

Console CPU: Oops, both Xbox 2 and PS3 are using IBM sourced Power PC chipsets. (iirc)

                          Go ahead, you deserve it.

You would be shocked the number of graphic design companies that are moving over to PCs from Mac's. This is not saying that one is better than the other, it's proof that they both do the tasks at hand well.

As for your garage band recordings, I know very few that use mac. I do however know a few singer/songwriters that use macs, iBooks to be exact. And most studios use proprietary HD recorders with their own intrfaces.

Wow. Do not try to contribute to a thread if you have no idea what you are talking about. You are saying the incredible amounts of keyboards and mice micrsoft comes out with everyyear is software? What about the Xbox? Software? Really? Its kinda funny that my wireless router and wireless network cards both say Microsoft on them.

Why would they make hardware? Because its an evergrowing business which they have the funds, brainpower, and marketing to make. Why make only software? Why try to dominate only in software? The tech market is so big right now, it would be dumb for them to stop producing hardware.
