Um, duh. In a month, itunes is gonna roll out a $12/mo service. And then itunes will be winning again.

If they have any business sense at all, which they do.. it's Apple, for christ's sake. Until a few years ago they'd been living off a sub-par product for a while. They still manage to completely own the HDD based mp3 player market, despite having a product that's more expensive than all the others, and for 'less' features.

What they don't share is that when you stop paying your $15 a month, you don't have access to that music anymore. With iTMS you are paying for access to the music in perpetuity, not for 30 days. In addition, it's not like you need to ever use iTMS to enjoy an iPod. I have never purchased a single song on iTMS, but I have a nice large selection of (totally legal) music on my iPod.

            My first thoughts are.

You don't have any music right now or you down own a single CD? What you are starting from scratch?

Sure if you want to rebuy all your songs that is your call but personally Ill take my wall of CDs, import them into iTunes and work with them from there....

99% of my music is imported from the CD. Only if I hear a song I really like and want RIGHT THEN AND THERE will I zip over to iTunes Muic Store and buy it. I think far too many people don't realize just how nice iTunes is without the music store as a +.

About that thing that makes you NEED to pay to get keep the music.. how does that work? I don't see any logical sense to it. You get the CD .. and then... It stops working if you don't pay? Is it some kind of super intelligent CD?

To be honest, buy the damn CD and be done. I have converted about 300 of my over 1000 CDs to MP3, but that is for convenience. iTunes and Napster (or any other sites like it) are a joke.

no, if you leave it stricktly in your itunes/napster player and then stop paying for the service, your itunes/napter program wont work anymore. however, if download it, burn to a cd and then upload it back onto your computer as a single mp3 file then that file should work in any mp3 player (windows media player, jukebox, etc....).

Too true, except for the "gotta have it now" times. The added benefit is that you can use a higher bitrate on your own stuff, as opposed to the compression that the itunes store uses.

But you don't want to do that unless you HAVE to because you are just re-encoding an already encoded song that was expended. It only gets worse. Better to encode off the CD at a high bit rate and be done with it.

i am sure out there somewhere on the net exists some form of extracting and converting program. one that can pull songs from dedicated players like nap/ituns and put them into seperate files.

Isn't there an option for downloading in Apple Lossless Codec? I thought there was.

I don't think you can Download Losslessly compressed music. The iTMS support page says:

"Songs purchased from the Music Store are encoded using the MPEG-4 AAC format."

I don't see any options on my setup for selecting a download format. But as I said earlier, I have never purchased a song, so perhaps there is something I have not seen.

You can encode/rip music off CD in the lossless format (or MP3 or a number of other formats as well) in iTunes.

For the record, I don't believe iTunes has the same issue.

However, if you want to burn those Naptser songs to cd... you'll need to use the Napster lite service, whch is ,um 99 cents a song.
