So wait let me get this straight. Say I use napster $15/month service and download the songs from napster to a mp3 player. Now if I dont pay the $15 or cancel my service the song I downloaded to my mp3 player wont work anymore? I dont see how thats possible.Comment

It's possible because you're not getting MP3s from the new Napster; you're getting Windows Media files, protected by Napster/Microsoft's Janus DRM. When you do a sync, your device gets an access token from Napster that authorizes any protected music for 30 days. If you don't sync again within that interval, the device will no longer play that protected music. If you cancel your account and resync, any Napster-To-Go music will be removed from the device.

And that's why reel to reel 16 track tapes are superior.
Just a lot harder to find in the music store.

Actually, the iPod has more functions than most other mp3 players imho. What sets it apart, I feel, it how intutitive it's use is. It doesn't come with a 4 billion page manual like most of my other mp3 players did. It took me all of 5 seconds to figure it out.Originally posted by teufelhundenIf they have any business sense at all, which they do.. it's Apple, for christ's sake. Until a few years ago they'd been living off a sub-par product for a while. They still manage to completely own the HDD based mp3 player market, despite having a product that's more expensive than all the others, and for 'less' features.
As for the Napster deal. I dilike anything that requires a monthly charge. What if I don't download any songs that month? I still get charged 14.95.
In the past year that I have used iTunes I have downloaded maybe 100 songs. That's $99.
The same time period with Napster would have cost me $179.40.
Unless you are planning on downloading over 182 songs a year iTunes/iPod will save you more.
I didn't buy my iPod with the intention of filling it up and imho that advertisement is totally irrelevant and completely stupid. I bought the iPod because it offered me the best portability for all my music. My entire musical colelction is currently on the iPod which is only just barely begining to reach 4,000. That means that I can double my current collection and still have room for more crap whereas the "Napster players" only support 5g.
This means that with my iPod I can listen to any song I currently own which is great when I'mon the road. If I suddenly want to listen to Vivaldi, bang! I got Vivaldi. If I feel like kicking it up a whole bunch of notches, bang! I got Porno for Pyros or RHCP.
Plus, only the iPod can currently be played through my radio via a shielded interface. All other players require either a FM patch, which I can honestly say from experience, stink or they have to use a tape adapter which poses two independant problems of it's own.
One, those things are fantastic for picking up electronic interference noise from the engine and electrical system and two, I haven't had a tape deck in my car for about.....8 years.
Forget it.
Let Napster go take a nap.

Hasty, don't get me wrong, I feel the iPod is a greatly superior product than the others, exactly because of what you described; how easy it is to navigate thousands of files. However, it doesn't have an FM radio, it doesn't have this, it doesn't have that.. ya know? I absolutley do NOT feel that is a negative, in any sense.. but many uninformed consumers see that ProductX has a voice recorder and the iPod doesn't, and as such, the iPod is not as good of a deal.SwallowBleach: It's good for you.

oh come on, you can not just straight to 16 track reel to reel. You need to go Cassette, Vinyl, 8-track, then 78's. You were never able to buy 16 track tapes in a music store. You are just being totally ridiculous now

They appeal to a select crowd.
The connoisseur. Apple has never tried to market to the masses becuase they know it just won't fit. In all honesty, the only reason that I have a pc is so I can game. The second games are playable on a Mac my pc goes toe way of the dodo.
I don't want one device that does a billion thing becuase most often the never do them all well much less great.
If I want to take a picture I'll carry my camera. If I want something to record my Lurch-like voice I'll get a voice-recorder. I don't want a camera on my cell or a cell on my camera thank you very much.
Also, the reason why so manyis because most consumers are sheep.uninformed consumers see that ProductX has a voice recorder and the iPod doesn't, and as such, the iPod is not as good of a deal.
I am too in most things but when it comes to electronics I prefer to analyze, analyze and analyze some more before I make a purchase.Return to the free market. I would say these would be considered marketing to the masses.

Ah, that just means you don't shop at the right stores.Originally posted by MuzikmanYou were never able to buy 16 track tapes in a music store. You are just being totally ridiculous now

You need to shop at the places that sell copies of the master recordings.
And let me know where those stores are.

People vote with their wallets. What's the #1 seller? The one that people want the most. Maybe the consumer thought, "man.. the iPod does not have a voice recorder!" then they thought, "man, I don't even USE a voice recorder now..."Originally posted by teufelhundenHasty, don't get me wrong, I feel the iPod is a greatly superior product than the others, exactly because of what you described; how easy it is to navigate thousands of files. Features are nice but ultimately, if the feature does not solve a problem that no one has, you are spending money to say "I got the one with the biggest list of stuff." Sort of like the Angels used to be. Wonder why that stopped?Comment

I dunno, main problem i have with the ipod is the price and the batt. life. I love the interface, so easy to use, and looks great. Plus they hold their resale pretty well.Comment
