I have an electric razor too, and while its fast and convenient, it does nowhere near as good a job as a real razor. It doesn't give as good a shave, so after work/school if you have to do anything you might have to shave again. Plus they tend to not shave so good on your neck for some reason. It never gets a clean shave on my neck, it always leaves some hairs behind. I'm not sure if its due to the angle of the hair there or the fact you can't get as much pressure because the skin gives more or what.
I'm in exactly the same boat. I can't get a decent shave on my neck with any electric.

By the way, you can now get the triple blades (like the ones for the mach 3) for the sensor excel. I can't get a decent shave with the mach 3 because of the swivelling head. The excel is the only way to go for me.
Shaving in the shower is the way to go. Just a small amount of soap smeared around the mirror and then lightly rinsed off prevents fogging nicely (if your "fog free" mirror turns out to be just as foggy as any other mirror, like mine).

I use the good 'ol single blade bic disposible.

To cure razor burn, a few things you can try. I hate to shave, but I have been doing so since 7th grade (yeah, I am a hairy ape).

Shave with the grain (not against). It does not get as close of a shave, but you will look clean cut.

Do not shave every day (unless you have to for work). Saving every other day (or more) gives your skin time to heal.

Use cold water when shaving. The cold will cause the pours around your hair to close up, this causes the hair to stand up and you get a better cut. It also prevents the hairs from being cut below the surface of the skin (#1 reason for ingrown hairs).

Use a good lotion style aftershave when done. This will prevent your skin from drying out and helps heal the skin. I find that the gel, liquid or any aftershaves that contain alcohol do nothing besides make you smell good...and who the hell cares if you smell good with a bunch of red bumps on your neck.

Those are about all the saving tips I can give you. Again, you can spend lots of money on razors and so forth. I suggest the single blade bic disposibles, a good shaving cream (or gell) and a good lotion based aftershave.

Shaving soap, shaving brush and a straight razor you'll never have razor burn. You may be missing large chunks of your face but nor razor burn. I do it and love it. However it took me a long time to get good with the blade.

Muz, I also do the cold water thing, but in addition to that, I shave after showering. Helps to soften up the man-fur.

what i've found works well is when and how you shave.
I use that sensitive skin barbasol beard buster shaving cream(i got some in my eyes and it didnt burn, how's that for mild?!)

First i get me face all wet with warm water, get a dollop of cream, spread appropriately

then i shave WITH THE GRAIN of the hair. anything else guaruntees razor burn if you so much as touch your face.

then i take a shower. i use a mach3 and never ever ever get razor burn, and i also never use that skin bracer aftershave stuff, for me it just irritates my skin 10X worse than anything else

                      hope it helps

I'll vouch for my Remington Titanium electric shavor! Very nice shave and it has a pop-up trimmer which is really handy (but not as accurate as my previous Remington model).

And no, my AO user name is not based on the electric shaver company of the same name.

I've used the same razor for the past 23 years, a Gillette Atra. It's all on how you prepare your face for the shave, I wash my face twice to remove all the oils, then lather up with plain bar soap. I get any where from 1 1/2 - 2 months from a blade, no burn and I do shave against the grain.
