one of my biggest pet peeves

do any other of you guys have parents who like to say no to things a lot, yet NEVER, EVER give a valid reason to back up their decision??

don't get me wrong, i love the 'rents, but their decisions make me wanna put a hole in our wall.

    for instance:
i decided to try piano when i was in the first grade - hmmm...i'm 16 now and still have 2 YEARS LEFT - yes, the 'rents are makeing me take piano until i'm 18. why?? i've been trying to figure that out for years.

so, just recently i got asked to prom. it's a dance intended for juniors and seniors. under-class people can go if asked by an upper-class person. i am a sophomore that was asked by a senior.
but nooooo, my mom doesn't think it's smart for me to go until i'm a junior.
    i've heard the reasons:
"you'll just get bored if you go all 3 years"

    WHO CARES?!?!
that is my own situation, is it not?? i'll be bored.

ohhh, and this one makes me laugh EVERY time i think of it.
they have this rule. i am not allowed to stay a full night at a friends house - coming home the next day.
seriously guys, i'm not 11 anymore.
part of this was caused by my older sister sneaking out of her friends house while staying their.
i guess since she did it, i'll be sure to do it too

everytime i tell them if they can give me a concrete answer to back up their answers, i'll shut up. i still haven't shut up.

so, i mainly post this for people who have kids as to why you guys do this.

    i've asked them if it's a trust issue - no it's not.
i haven't touched alcohol, drugs, smokes, etc... EVER - haven't even thought of it.

i've heard the one - "they care about us too much"

so, much danger am i in by going to a school dance??
the girl who asked me is a very good girl - smart, NON-alcoholic, non-retarded - they know that.

i don't think they realize how good of kids they have.
the biggest offense in our family was my sister that tried smoking - ONCE
my brother was never into any of that. he's one of the coolest people i know. elected marshall of our school, #4 in his class, die-hard Christian
my younger sisters are too young to be effected.
and my biggest offense is being pulled over......multiple times - no ticket

WOW....that was long, so if anybody actually read all of that, help me out!

Tough luck, they're your parents. Wait until your 18, then the freedoms will emerge.

Try and work it out. Complaining / disobeying will only worsen the problem.

Otherwise, they're your legal guardians for a while.

I have been to high school dances since I was 7th grade and I always had fun. And I have been to a prom every year of highschool. Yes I was a popular jock in highschool. For my freshman and Sophmore years I went with groups of people. Only my junoir and senior year did I go with just a date. But they were to my school proms not another.

I have never drank a beer or smoked at any of them. I was a jock not an idiot. I had friends at all of them so I was never bored.

I think if you talk to your parents with the girl you are going with you will have a better chance of going then arguing about it by yourself.

I feel your pain. I'm an 18 yr old Senior in hs, get good grades, sports, mock trial, speech, school newspaper ed, and what do i get? a 10:30 curfew on weekdays (if they let me go out at all), 1 am curfew on friday/sat. (even though i have no legal curfew), and i have to be off the comp by 10:30 EVERY NIGHT, and that's after they bicker at me for a half hour straight. i mean, jesus, what unrealistic mold are they comparing me to? I got accepted to good colleges, best act grade in class, and yet they treat me like i'm a 13 yr old drug addict that got expelled from school. I guess the real (subconscious) reason behind their protection is that my oldest sister is a little less than perfect (graduating from college this year, but wasn't too straight in hs), and that i'm the youngest child. They evidently haven't heard of the concept of positive reinforcement, because no matter what good i do, i hardly ever get any more priviledges.

Sounds like a plan to me.

Never had any of those problems myself. But I'm somewhat anti-social and damn lazy so I don't care that much about going out and doing stuff.

Just suck it up for 2 years till you're 18 and can do whatever you want. That or kill you parents. Decision is up to you.

Sounds harsh. But they're your parents and what they say goes.

I try to think things through both sides.. Sometimes I tihnk "well maybe its just MY harmones..." But it often confuses me to the point of frustration.

                          Example:

I work for an entire summer, save up and buy a mag. Stock RT Pro. After Deember rolls on by, I buy a rial, adn a unimount adn start selling some odds and ends online to cover the costs.

I think I'm doing well financially, I've got over a hundred bucks in the bank adn more comming, One day I tell my mom I'm heading to teh post office to drop off a package and I get told to stop selling stuff online.

Okay my grades have been slipping a bit. Very understandable.

This week, I'm working on my LX. Finally about to get it tuned when my mom shouts up "You done any Homework yet?!" And I reply with a no, because I did it in school adn have nothign else to do.

She goes away adn a little bit later, my stepdad comes upstairs and tells me to stop dryfirign my gun and to put it awya and study. Study what?

What the hell do I need to study? I can tell you exactly what I'm going to do for the rest of my life. I am already studyign for a test I'm taking next year so I can become a small arms tech in the Marine Corps. I've had my life laid out for a while now.

I'm not the ind of kid to just pick up a book adn read. I do whats expected of me. I'll coem on an automag forum and read the tech section to learn about the stuff I love. Or I'll turn on the history channel and learn that way.

But I can understand they're just concerned for me, so I degass my marker and put it on my shelf.

They only want the best for you, and a lot of times it seems harsh, but remember some day they'r enot going to eb there anymore, and your going to wish they were, adn you are going to wish to god you coul spend just 10 more minutes with them.

"Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." -JFK

yep, so you just summed up EVERYTHING i'm going through - pretty much exactly what i'm going through.

                            i get good grades
                            i do sports
i do band - i'm a drummer, so none of those "band geek" jokes
i do piano - you can make fun of this
i am a VERY social person - w/ the right crowd
                            i am a solid Christian
                            i do not drink
                            i do not smoke
                            i do not do drugs
                            i do not cuss

and, like you said, they treat me like a 13 year old. they nag at me constantly - my nights are always cut short by their rules - in by 10-10:30 - ON WEEKENDS!!!

                            i can't take it anymore.

i'm beginning to think they like me being mad at them constantly
