I think people need to step back and take a look at the bigger picture here before they rant about what a "bad" picture it was or how it should have been "this way", whatever.....lets consider a few things for a minute.
Star Wars was released in the late 70's. I was under 10 years old when it came out. It was absolutely amazing to me then. I didn't notice the bad finish on Darth Vaders helmet. I wasn't concerned over the blue screen inconsistancies /"wires" surrounding the Millenium Falcon (or any other spacecraft for that matter), and I didn't care that over half the set was actually made up of PVC fittings and the like. I was enthralled. I was in for the whole enchilada.
I was able to look past the Ewoks, the pasts equvalent to Jar Jar. I didn't complain about all the cutesy crap being pawned off on R2D2...I was able to look past what in retrospect was a mediocre script with sub-standard acting that was below a good portion of the cast. I can forgive Hammil cause he just suxs anyway, poor guy.
I was absolutely in love with Leia, like I was supposed to be. I was afraid of Vader and the Emperor. I was rooting for the Rebels every step of the way. I was a young kid/teen, and I am who the movie was marketed towards.
Now move into the "new" movies, the prequels as it were. The effects, budget, editing, everything about the movies are 110% better than the original Star Wars. Was the plot or script any better? No, but consider the source and who it was MARKETED for. These movies were made with kids and selling toys in mind. Many of us who have grown up with SW would like to think that Lucas wrote all this for us. We want to pick it apart because it doesn't live up to the image we have in our mind of the "great" first series.
That was over 20 years ago. They were state of the art then. These new movies are an impressive technilogical accomplishment, but how many other movies are there now that have the budget, and the computer generation to impress us with special effects?
In a time when amazing special effects are the standard......I am not so certain that the new episodes weren't as good, really better than the others. I just think the viewing audiance is jaded and forgot that we aren't all 10 anymore.
