Nanos are a huge ripoff. For $50 more you can have something with five times as much space. I think I'm going to spring for a 20 GB color soon; I've had a 20 for about 9 months now, and it's just starting to have some minor problems. I figure a brand new one with a color screen for $269 (student discount through Apple) isn't a bad idea.

I've got a 40g one from a year ago. About 14g is songs, and the rest are disk images of software that I might use at a client location. hugely awesome.
However, if you just use it for music, I'd think the 40g is over kill. I have roughy a 35g music libary, I just don't load all of it. 15g or so, is good for a long time...Shaun Nelson --- old, fat, slow.... did I mention lazy? I ate all the pies

I have a 20gig one, my roomate has a mini and my girlfriend just got her black nano yesterday. None of us paid retail for them. I picked up my 20gig 4th generation iPod for $80 in the classifieds on another forum, my roomate picked up his for $120 on ebay and my girlfriend paid $260 on ebay for hers. All of them work great and all of us are happy with them.Rooster "But such is the mentallity of the Arab people. Which is why as long as there are Arabs, there will be a terrorist problem."

The NANO is cool for people on the move casue it doesn't have a hard drive. Its using FLASH MEMORY so you dont have the little nuances of a hard drive. I recommend it for the person talking about the gym. Flash memory wont skip or have any 'jiggle' damage (which in general IPODS dont have... but still, the possibility is there w/ a hard drive based player).
I'm wanting a 4gb Nano now so I can have it at work and in the car discreetly. I love my MINI though. I sent it back for a new battery and got it back in 4 days. Its a wakeup call for the Nintendo generation

I recommend the iaudio X5. In addition to mp3s it also plays OGG, WMA, and FLAC. It has radio, video, photos, USB-OTG, text, and voice recording. I got my 30gb for 307 US, and I've seen the 20g for around 260-270.

My wifes four or five year old (original first ones, when was that?) iPod just gave up the ghost on her. This was one of the very first ones to ever come out so its kind of hard to believe it actual lasted this long I guess. But it appears to be dead. Will not restore. Started doing it this past weekend. But was certainly a good one for all the use it got. These originals (or at least this one) was 4 gig. She had it mostly full but still had a bit more room on it. Maybe a few CD's worth or room left. She loved this thing.
So.... this weekend is her birthday. So I decided Monday to get her the Nano. Since she seemed satisfied with 4 gigs and it just so happens the biggest Nano was 4 gig... I ordered her one of those with the personalized engraving. A black one. Paid for quick shipping. I ordered direct from Apple store. And they were pretty quick. They shipped in a day and I Got it yesterday. A day later. I was afraid it would not make it in time but it certainly did. With a whole day to spare actualy. Just took it out to verify the personalization was done right. Pretty neat little thing it is. Going to give it to her Tomorrow.Want some Candy little Girl?

What you could try, Phil, is what I do for my buddies with that problem.
Using some guitar pic's, separate the iPod face from the back.
Disconnect the batter from the iPod itself.
Using your firewire cable, start it up manually from your pwoersource or computer.
After it's running again, plug the battery in, and let it charge.
That.
Or buy a new one.Comment

if your gonnaget an ipod or any mp3 player for that matter
GET A SOLID STATE, they alst longer, transfer faster generally, and dont fragment
theyr much much better, also they use less battery life.
maybe one fo the new 2-4 gig nanos?
or my personal reccomendation unles you need more than a gig is the samsung yepp player
20 gigs is alot for most people.
1 gig holds 200-300 songs which is all my favorites, then some stuff to pass the time, and plenty of free room for other recordings etc

Hey its worth a shot. We were going to take it apart and see what makes one of these older ones tick anyway. So why not? Thanks and I will fiddle with it and see what it does. After I give her the new Nano tomorrow.Originally posted by Automaggot68What you could try, Phil, is what I do for my buddies with that problem.

As to the battery issue.... this ones battery was still working fine after all these years. Oddity I guess.
But... if I was buying for size of storage not size of device. I would do the 20 gig regular. Its about the same price as the 4 gig Nano is. But to each his own as to use I guess. We got several people around work here that use thier iPods for storing all thier data and taking it with them. They use em as a flash portable drive all the time for thier computing work. That way they always have their work with them. And they normaly get the 20 and 40 gig ones for that sort of thing. But the wife just does some music stuff with her's so its more fitting to give her the Personalized Nano one.Last edited by Ole Unka Phil; 09-16-2005, 07:59 PM.Want some Candy little Girl?
