They are hip and stylish for a lot of people. If they are not your ball of wax, then they just aren't, but they are quite popular with a lot of people. Throw in the fact that they get great gas mileage and they are relatively inexpensive, and you have a great car.
Here's the skinny, if you like the car, then it's a good choice. If you bought the car to make yourself look better in the eyes of your friends/peers/etc then you made a poor choice. While I sometimes get the vanity bug and think it's nice that people like my car, the only important thing is that *you* like your car. Besides, maybe the people poking fun are just jealous.
