Toys of today better than toys of yester year?

    I think so.

I was at target buying a french press and wandered into the the toy section. Crazy man, you can buy an RC plane for $45. it was a little dinky but the thing was fully controllable. I dont think i can even remember seeing an RC plane in a dept. store as a kid. It was mostly a niche hobbystore item.

I started thinking about all this....put yourself in the mindset of a 10yr old boy. If you were to choose the toys of yesteryear vs. the toys of today, you would most undoubtely pick todays stuff.

And dont say, "we had diecast stuff", or even bring the materials used in a toys construction. In all honesty that is irrelavant. Kids generally dont care about that. They care only about the cool/fun factor of it.

...ever in the continual search of time dilation.

i dunno, nerf toys arent nearly as cool, nor are supersoakers as they were of yesteryear. there is something just so cool about gi joe with the rubberband waist.heck, i dont even know if they have gi joes any more, or any of their cool vehicles. i mean, i will admit there are some awesome things kids have now, but hey, technology makes better toys

Of course today you will find more "cool" stuff. Technology will improve what is available and also drop the cost. But will those toys of today still be around in 20+ years, very doubtful. Toys from the 80's that didn't get broken are reaching silly prices, early handheld arcade style games are already rising in cost assuming that they have survived.
GI Joes we didn't have here our version was Action Man and any still to be found are at a premium cost wise. Now we do have GI Joe but it is rubbish in both look and quality compared to the orginal.
It is unlikely that handheld computer games of today will be collectable or still around in 20 years. NES or Amstrads or Commodres are getting scarcer every day. I have a Game Gear that still works in a closet somewhere but I didn't pay a lot for it when I got it as it was used so maybe that will be worth some money in a few years. But when you consider you can buy new versions of the old games for a few $'s now where is the need for the old units?
I saw yesterday two games for the TV which were just the controller but built in were 10+ games and this was for less than the cost of what just a spare controller was when they were released. Virtual Reality games were touted as the next "big thing" but it didn't happen, well not with the gloves and googles ala Lawnmower Man, since 1st person shooters are now far in advance of what those VR games ever were. So go forward 20 years and assuming that you can still get a console to play todays games they will be the equivilent of Spaces Invaders, graphics and controller wise.
Other than traditional games such as card games, chess, backgammon etc what board games will still be around? In some respects technology has a lot to answer for. Advancement in technology is often an excuse for poorer quality of the goods and makes for a quicker disposable nature of these current units.
Think about cars, once you could fix them with a set of wrenches now you need a laptop and often the part that the laptop is needed for turns out to be simply a throw away and replace item. Even with computers the actual number of parts you can really fix yourself are very low and I mean people who really know what they are looking at and can solder, even for those people the majority of the parts are still throw away and replace.

The NES and SNES alone make old toys the winners.

Thecnology wise toys have gotten much cooler, but new toys are way to safe to be fun.

                      Tonka trucks are now plastic
                      Erector sets are now plastic
                      They no longer make Lawn-Jarts
You can't get the little guns that shoot the plastic discs

                        Ricker,

Yo man, i dont doubt the old skool toys were the shiznit. They most def hold a place in my heart.

But do a side by side comaprison of the old toys vs the new toys. There is a bigger selection nowadays and are more sophisticated.

I mean, as an adult i would pick a Dinobot over a Robosapien, belive that! But as ten year old i would of def. picked a robosapien vs an nonmoving, inanimate folding toy.

I took a walk through Toys R'Us a few days ago, looking for one of those metal toy guns for my halloween costume. I was suprised to see they don't sell ALOT of the cool toys I used to have.... Toy Stores were definitely cooler back in the day!
