Yes an Earthlink phone is compatible with both Verizon and Sprint's CDMA network. In fact, if you buy an "Earthlink" phone plan you are actually using Verizon. If you want to be 100% sure, just call verizon customer service and ask if you can activate an earthlink branded treo 650 under one of their plans.

They should say "Yes, just take it a local verizon store or activate it online".

From what I know, VZW will not activate a phone that is not VZW-branded. You can't buy a US Cellular phone on eBay and have VZW activate it.

If you position yourself correctly when speaking to the phone company, they will give you whatever you need. You just have to get yourself the correct angle when calling. There are some phone companies, such as Cingular and I believe TMobile, will give you the unlock code to use their phones on another network. If you do not feel comfortable calling the cell phone company and trying your luck with your social engineering skills, or lack thereof, you may want to resort to an online forum.

actually they won't really have a choice...they can't stop you from activating it, as long as it is compatible with their network and unlocked to read their signal.
