Err.... Both of those will get boring. Not enough boom. Get a mosin nagant, theyre dirt cheap. The ammo is pretty cheap too. And much more boom.
Need some input on which rifle to get !

Lets explain this:
.22 - what most everyone starts shooting, likely one of the most popular bores in the world. Made by nearly every cartridge manufacturer. Made to be "idiot" proof, readily available. Virtually no recoil
.17 - generally a specialty target or varmint load for those seeking something "different". Not nearly as readily available.

Get a .22, they're just awesome when it comes to plinking, and will kill their fair share of rodents/animals too if needed. Plus the ammo is dirt cheap so you can go shooting more often.Originally posted by Soopa Villain17idk , ill check out the shop next to me when they open , but i think id rather go with somethign small as ive never owned a gun before. and something relable like the .17 , but i need to know if all the ammo will work or just the hornaday . thanks
Actually our .22s are some of my favorite guns just cause their so fun. In fact I'm planning on someday soon going down to wal-mart to get an el-cheapo .22 @ $99 bucks just for throwing behind the seat of my work pickup so I can shoot at the random gray squirrels and coyotes.

Yeah but a mosin nagant will effectively kill a bear should one enter your home. And it makes much bigger holes in old cars and bottles. Also the money you save in getting one could easily be placed towards a crapload of ammo.Kosmo For President '08, '12, '16... However long it takes

if your looking for a rifle to just use for target practice(WHICH might eventually lead to shooting squireels, rabbits, and the sort) then i would go with a ruger 10/22 over the bottom. I have shot marlin small caliber guns many times, and i own a ruger 10/222 and from my experience rugers are smaller, lighter, more reliable, and there are many more aftermarket upgrades for them. (larger clips, different stocks, different barrels, etc.).
If you really want to go with a marlin get the 17 over the 22, even though the shells cost more i tihnk the 17 is better built.

The ammo you want to .17 HMR (hornaday mag rimfire). There isn't a special brand you need just the .17 HMR. I believe remington makes some and I'm sure many other manufacturers do as well. So to answer your question, yes, you can use the stuff from wal-mart.Comment

Maybe you should stick to paintball.

Lol... yup our local Wally-World had 4 or 5 .22's for $99. One of them was a tiny little thing for a kid and the rest were full sized rifles. A couple of them were semi autos, one was a pump, and one was a clip fed bolt action. They all had synthetic stocks which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it. For me and my application a synthetic stock would be best because I just want a low-maintainence, throw-behind-the-seat-and-forget-about-it-till-ya-need-it, kinda gun.Originally posted by etjoyridewalmart has $99 .22's???i'll have to check out the guns there next time i go : )
