      we own both a semi-auto .22 and a bolt action Marlin .17

      target = get the .22

any chance of varmit = .17

I have never had as much fun shooting as I have with the .17

I've been to one of them MG shoots vary fun. If you get a .22 watch what your shotting at and make sure you have a good back stop to stop your rounds. a .22 can go 2000 fps and the .17 can go 2200 fps. a 22 and a 17 can ealsy go up to a mile.

If you want a nice .22 long get a ruger 10/22 you can buy all kind of upgrades for them I had one that looked like a Ak 47.

Thats one of the big problems with getting a 22, people dont treat it like its a real gun and realize that it has real gun capabilities such as bullets flying past what youre shooting at. People just get in the mindset that its a little plinking bb gun that wont do legitimate damage if it hits something. Im tellin ya, get a nagant. As Tony would say, theyre grrrrrreat.

I love marlins. I have a .444 Marlin that I hunt with every year, and it is the most natural feeling gun I've ever shot.

Just to help you out a little (and others who may be wondering....or don't know):

.22 rimfire is made by at least 24 seperate manufacturers, in just about any hunting or target version/bullet weight from 32gr (grains Vs ounce) to 60gr, numbering into the hundreds of different types of loads. However, the average store will carry hollowpoint or solid 32 or 40gr LEAD BULLETS, which are just fine for plinking or varmint hunting. LONG RIFLE is the normal size, although there is LONG, SHORT, BB, and CB CAP. Usually guns will only shoot ONE of these types, though long ago some were made to chamber Long Rifle, Long, and Shorts. The vast majority of modern guns will only take Long Rifle.

.22 Magnum Rimfire is a much longer case, using a 40gr JACKETED bullet. Magnum ammunition CANNOT be fired from .22LR guns. Hollowpoint and solids are also offered by most ammunition makers.

.17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (we call it the ".17 hummer") is a .22 magnum case necked down to take the much smaller in diameter .17 bullet. .17HMR is available in 17gr and 20gr loadings in hollowpoint and solid types. .17 magnum CANNOT be fired in any .22 chambered gun. Hornady developed and named it, but most ammunition companies make it.

.17 Mach 2 is a necked down CCI brand "Stinger" .22 case. It also uses 17gr jacketed bullets. While more expensive than .22's, performance is half again what is available from any .22.

.17 Aguila uses standard .22 cases necked down to .17, but use heavier bullets than the .17M2 for increased downrange impact. You can shoot .17 Aguila in .17M2 guns, but NOT the other way around.

.17M2 and .17 Aguila CANNOT be fired from any .22 chambered gun.

Marlin and Savage (my preferrence) both make quality .22 and .17 guns.

The Ruger 10/22 is very versitile in its many custom parts and accessories available.

May I offer a suggestion?? I have the 980S in 22 long and I think its a very good choice for plinking. The bolt action is very smooth, and .22L is more than enough to whack a varmint if needed. The ammo is very affordable, and the stainless steel construction is an added bonus for keeping it clean/rust free. I added a Leupold VX II 1-4x scope and find this combination to be a lot of fun to shoot.

                    A few I was considering:

                    Bushmaster Carbon 15 (9mm)

                    Bushmaster Carbon 15 (5.56mm)

I would probably add a six position collapsing butt stock, reflex sight, and maybe a foregrip in the case of the 5.56mm.

Now you might say WHY?! Once I am done contracting and return to my old PI ways back in Texas, I and another fellow I know are obtaining our Personl Protection Offficer certs and will also offer those services. This little piece of hardware I can legally carried concealed. It is also business tax deductable for me.

A short single point sling allowing the weapon to rest under the armpit area --- this could be used to conceal it :

I'll vote for the Ruger 10/22.

I've had one for years and it's never failed me. Simple, solid design and very easy to clean.

                          Lots of accessories available too.

                          Good Luck,

                          Eric

Actually, if you add a buttstock to that, it becomes a Short Barreled Rifle, which is an NFA item. It may or may not be legal in your state, and if it is legal, it's going to cost you an extra $200 for a tax stamp.

I would forget the Marlin and go for a Ruger 10/22 rifle. You can be able to get a bigger clip for more ammo. The are no longer being sold, but I bet you can find someone, or some outlit that are selling them.

if your looking for a 10/22, they are really common, awsome shooting guns... they are sort of like the autococker of paintball, you can upgrade EVERYTHING.

check out http://www.gunbroker.com, its the ebay of firearms.
you need FFL to get anything though.
