i took a mech engineering course at WPI this summer, and we spent about 3-5 hours on fire protection engineering. we got to see a ton of videos of tests like that, the rooms they run the tests in and a few small tests.

when the room heats up from the fire and smoke to a certain temperature, everything in the room basically spontaneously combusts. it starts out small, gets slowly bigger, and then... the room just explodes in flames. of course that video went a lot faster, because of the christmas tree. christmas trees are actually pretty fun to set on fire, i need to do that again this year .
