Uhh, wha? This is in no way the medias fault. Who cares what the heck anyone told you. The families were told that the miners survived, 20 minutes later the company found out that they were wrong in telling them that, and then 3 hours later they told the families and media the truth. Tv just told you what they had been told, which didnt matter any way since none of you were connected with the incident, and if you were you wouldve been misinformed by someone besides tv.

The point is that there are other sources besides the company that anyone of a million reporters could have verified the information but did not even think to bother to do so. These are the same media outlets that expect you to accept everything they tell you as "accurate reporting". Right...

So, who besides the company would have known if the miners were alive. The rumor started, from what I understand, in the rescue headquarters. Now, taking an overheard conversation as a source was a problem, but I don't think this was readily verifiable through a second "on-site" witness.

That was kind of my point. The word got to the families without the help of the media. This was the real blunder and they were the ones truly affected by it.

Ok, the media went to the governor and asked him. He confirmed it. So is it still the media's fault? Hell even the command was confused about the whole thing. The only people who had the facts were the rescuers them selves and I don't think too many reporters had access to them 13,000 feet into the mine.

So it is okay and an understandable mistake then since they couldn't verify it and went with the best known information? Just asking...

the worst thing is reading the newspapers that said they survived. it was on the front page with a caption that said something along the lines of "a miracle happened to the loved ones" and its well, sad. not to sound like a wuss, but you have to admit its sad to get their hopes up only to have it crumble later that day

Yes it is an understandable and acceptable mistake on the medias part. It is not an understandable and acceptable mistake on the companies part.

Good, no everyone please cut the President some slack for being misinformed by others who could not accurately verify if there were WMD's in Iraq.

Sorry, hate to bring a political issue into the thread but I am just sickened at the utter deseperate effort to forgive some for misinformation while condeming others. Ironic and hypocritical

Thats entirely different. It doesnt matter that the news said they were alive. Aww someone feels sad that they were misinformed by the newspaper. Lets hold a candle light vigil for all the people who were horrifically saddened by the false information. And a charity drive should help all the saddened people too. The media did not inform anyone who was involved in the incident about anything, those involved in it informed the media. If you werent involved in it, you dont matter.

Meanwhile, 2,189 US soldiers have died in Iraq. At the end of 2005, 16,185 soldiers had been wounded. That is just a little bit worse than getting bam wannabe's hopes up. Just a little bit.

Make a trip to West Virginia and express those sentiments. Just as I expected, make excuses. Further discussion is pointless. You proved the point well.

I did prove my point well, but apparently you dont get it.

Sad person because TV lied to them < 2189 dead people 16185 wounded
Sad person because TV lied to them < Sad person because husband died in mine and company lied to them about it

I never said it was good that the news reported that 12 were alive, but I hardly call that a decision that cost anyone their life, let alone thousands of peoples lives.

They tend to consider IQ, and one's past participation in threads, before allowing someone to be a mod.
