    Question for firearms enthusiasts . . .

Alright, so I'm a huge fan of the Springfield Armory M-14 (and most of its variants). My question is, with current firearm laws, is it possible for a civilian to own an M-14/variant in semi-auto with the standard 20 round magazine? Is it possible to own with an FFL? I don't plan on owning it to go hunting or anything, just for target shooting at a range.

    Thanks for the input!

That will depend on your state/local laws.
It would be fine in my area, so long as it is truely semi-auto, but may not be in yours.
Nice to see an M-14 fan for once! That was what I had to qualify with in the Navy. Heavy as hell, but lots of stopping power.
I'd call the police and just ask. They should know...

Yeah, the laws very from state to state, and being in Mass., a 20 round mag is probably illegal, but I'm not sure.

Looks like You're looking for the M1A, You described it, a very good rifle, even for a Semi, most guys go Bolt, but yea, I thought if I ever got a Semi Long Range rifle, I'd get an M1A, or M21, under current laws you can buy and own an M1A which is basically, a M14, without full auto, standard .308 (A great all around bullet size, it has great range, great trajectory, and it's the most common among Snipers in Law Enforcement and Military. Which means there are alot of options for Grains and Bullets. )

Also, a good website for you would be http://www.ar15.com/forums/forum.html?b=6&f=6
Great Revenue of Information, also, the posted picture thread is a great section and great for ideas. Though a Standard M1A no frills will run you around ball park $1,500, while an M25 will run you $5,000.

Springfield's a great company, and the M14 is still being used today, the Marine Corps has actually created a new scheme for it called the M14 DMR (Designated Marksman Rifle) designed for Platoon level Marksman capabilities, M14 variants such as the M21, and M25 (Military Issue) still find alot of use in SOF (Special Operation Forces) the M4 and M16's just don't have that kind of knock down power and range that the .308 does, but anyway I'm rambling at this point.

EDIT: The One thing is, you said you're wanting to go to the range, the M1A is a great and wonderful thing, but the re-routing of the gas, and the cycling of the bolt, will actually decrease your accuracy past 800m, If you're like me, I don't personnaly own any fire arms yet, but I'm considering some HTR weapons, but I'd like a .308 Bolt action, Clip Fed of some variation for long range shots, though I still want an M1A, my first distance rifle will be a .308 Bolt Action, certainly.

But other then that, I doubt you'll want to shoot past 800m unless you're going after some kind of championship or you're like me and just want the ability, it's not unheard of but, I'd just go bolt for anything past 600-800m, unless you have $20,000 and can buy a H&K PSG-1 or a Stoner's Armament SR-25. But, I could buy one good rifle for 2-3k, maybe, and get an M1A for 1,500-3,000, so, yea let's be realistic. The technology is advancing though, it really is.

I'd check your state laws. Gun shop outta know off hand. I have all 20 rounders for mine, but I'm in Wisconsin. Not a super big deal not having the hi cap mags, but it looks cooler and I think it is easier for speedy reloads. I would recommend The M25 trigger group if Springfield still will do it. I have mine set 1.5 lbs trigger pull. It's way smoother and 3lbs lighter than the national match trigger group was on my National Match M1A.

FYI Springfield at the time I had mine done also could do M1 Garand rifle with the M25 trigger group. In case anyone is interested.

Ar15's a great website, I've never seen any discrimination, flaming, down putting or anything, if anything it's a great community that displays alot of information, and will answer "Newb" questions frequently, They're very laid back, and their very reputable sources, why wouldn't you go to AR15.com?

Because they're bigots, racist as hell, and quite often completely goddamn worthless when it comes to almost any type of information.

If you want some real advice, from real shooters (unlike the armchair commandos and mall ninjas over at ar15.com), try www.thefiringline.com, www.thehighroad.org, or the Guns and Ammo Forums . They're not perfect, but they're better than the alternative.

There are perhaps 4 members on ar15.com that actually know anything remotely related to the AR system.

The rest of the 30,000 members are blubbering idiots.

I've never seen any racism, or anti-govt. sentiments you're talking about. There's alot of Ex-Military and Police Officers there, actually, Check the 1911 forums and the M1 forums, and the Class III's.

I mean maybe I'm wrong, but I know it's a good forum, I've never seen them do anything near what you're describing. As far as Racism, If there was racism on that forum at all, the Mod would've stopped it, But anyway, I gave my two cents on the M1A.
