I usually buy Maxtor drives. I do have a WD Raptor though. I'm not going to comment on why Maxtor... it gets into religious battles.

I'm not a motherboard Nazi anymore... ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ABIT, DFI, Shuttle, BCM, IWILL, etc. have all worked well for me... and they've all had crappy boards on occassion. I'm more interested in what chipset is on the board and feature-set... than what brand it is.

I don't really give a crap what "brand" of memory I get... so long as it is the right type. Many brands that people swear by... don't actually make the memory, and the actual manufacturer of the chips can vary from batch to batch. (Yeah, I know there's more to it than just the chips... but whatever) Brand XYZ does not have a monopoly on Micron, NEC, Mistubishi, or whatever memory chips are the hot crap at the moment. You can get the exact same chips on "generic" memory.

I've been doing this stuff way too long to get excited about it anymore...

It's kinda funny seeing people get excited over this stuff still... a lot of psychological rather than actual/significant benefits get discussed.

I know what you mean exactly but I've gotten really giddy lately as I got my 3 15K RPM SAS drives, my raid controller (256MB of cache and a 600MHz Proc!!!), now I just gotta wait on Tyan's SAS card to come out. Then the tempting idea of buying 2 new opterons with the major slashing of dual core pricing on the 2XX series it's gettin me excited again and the new socket F's!!!

Yeah... HDD technology still catches my attention. If I'm going to dump money into performance gear... HDD stuff is high on my list.

I'm kinda waiting right now. I personally don't think that what's currently available is significantly different from two years ago. Sure, everything is faster... and we have a couple new technologies... but no sweeping architecture/philosophy changes. I'm not talking about just one component... but everything as a whole.

I think the next couple of years will be interesting... we're starting to see a move towards the next big thing.
