    Relax, have a Homebrew!

A buddy and I just started homebrewing last Thursday. It all started when he got a lab position a few months ago. A few of his co-workers and his superior brew their own beer, so it was only a matter of time before he got into it himself. There's a brewery close to my campus which I've been in before, so we split the cost of a starter kit, bought a couple brew kits, and started brewing that night. Here's what we came up with:

On the left is my Raspberry Wheat, and on the right is my friends Honey Weizen. We threw the blow-off tube on his right before this pic was taken, since he needed to fill up his carboy almost to the top to hit 5 gallons:

The fermentation lock. The simplicity of this thing amazes me..it lets CO2 out, but doesn't let air in:

We bought all of our supplies at Northern Brewer on Grand Ave in St. Paul (www.northernbrewer.com).

So AO, let's see your Homebrews!

Keep it out of the sun.

Looks like you have a good roll going. What yeast you use? Did it come in a kit with some malt extracts and hops plugs?
My 3 carbs have been silent awile. Maybe do a mead this summer.

We're moving them to the basement today (it will keep them cooler too). The kit came with 6.6 lbs of Wheat malt syrup, 1oz of Hallertau hops pellets, Wyeast german wheat yeast (the "smack pack", and some Raspberry Extract that gets added in at bottling along with the corn sugar. I was surprized at how easy it was to make.

Why in God's name do you have 3 empty carboys!? A mead would be interesting to make, and if you started soon you might have it done in time for the Ren. Fest.!

We definitely want to start an Oktoberfest during August so it will be done in October.

Homebrewing rules. I've got a couple of batches of IPA and some Coffee Stout that I made sitting in the fridge. I havn't had time to brew anymore though. I like the IPA and the coffee stout so much that I just end up making more of the same stuff instead of trying new brews. oh well.

Beer tastes much better when you've made it yourself.

Invest in a turkey fryer and a big ol pot, you'll be super happy you did. I've got mead thats about a year old I need to finish bottling, just got a kegging setup and I've got another kit lying around I'll do before I start doing all grain. beeradvocate.com has a good homebrewing forum if you have any questions or ideas.

            Two words:
            Kids
            House

One of my good friends and I started to do some homebrew after his dad passed away. He made his own wine and experimental stuff with dandilions and choke cherries and the sort back in the day. On the opposite end, some family friends got me into mead after they showed how easy it is. They would enter mead out at Ren fest for judging.
Hey if you made some ciser(cizer?) thats mead+cider, you might have it ready by graduation. It takes like 18 months just to ferment the primary stage.
Oh yeah, teh ladies + mead = good times.

Making beer for microbiology lab is always a good class.

That's how you ended up with the Kids, a House and no time to brew.

                Oh SNAP.

I should have more time to brew than play paintball too. Currently doing neither.

Its nice not being a big drinker though, I can make my own batch and it lasts me all summer.

Home brew scares me a bit, or I should say my buddies does. I had some a while back & it went through me like an overdose of Exlax. I'd start cramping behind my eyes & then it went down hill from there.

They probably used 'bakers yeast' to ferment it. Or the other end of the spectrum, made some funky spiced ale with clove, cinnamon or orange peel.

My first cider I let roll waay too long.
/made for some decent apple vinegar
//used enough bottling sugar to blow caps or have it foam 1/2 empty when opened
