    Getting sick and exercising

Of course exercising while you're sick is a bad idea, I already know that... but I'm kinda stuck in a dillema so I'm here for advice.

Okay, so a couple years ago me and a friend had a little "boxing" match (complete noobies just throwing blows in a ring). Now he wants to have another to even things up to 1-1 and I've gotta cut 15-20 pounds to get down to his weight level. I wouldn't have any problems with cutting weight since I'm a little tubby anyway, but I just recently got sick and I've gotta cut the weight in 5 weeks. I had a pretty intense workout and dietary menu laid out for me but it kinda got shot down by my sickness.

Should I continue with the exercise and diet or rest up and intensify my workout later? Or should I just try to convince my friend to delay the match a little longer?

      Hell with that.

Tell your friend if he aint man enuff to take you on as is then theirs no need to fight to prove it.

Or tell your friend to bulk up after all he wants the bout why should you have to work for it LOL.

lol, funny thing is that I'd probably be better off cutting weight since I've gotten outta shape. 135 is the weight I was when I fought him so we decided to drop down to our respective weights. He's cutting down to 125 so we're bothing losing weight to fight.

You'll loose weight if you're sick anyhow. You just won't stay as fit (assuming you are right now).

I dunno how old you are but losing 10% of your body weight is serious business if you're still growing.
Unless you're at least 20 years old, you really should limit weight training to 15-pound reps or below and mainly focus on cardio. Bodyweight exercises (pushup, situp, pullup, etc.) using no additional weight and swimming is the quickest way to get in shape.
Careful on the diet end because you really need to maintain a steady flow of nutrients. Don't starve yourself just because you want to lose weight. It may well be that you're no longer meant to be 135 anymore.

If you want to beat your buddy at boxing and neither of you know much, the easiest way to do it is to get in the first big hit and then just play D until he wears himself out. Come out hard for 4-6 punches and then hang back and let him tire. You'll know he's done when he relaxes his jaw too much.

            And please, be safe!

I'm 19 at the moment and my training menu includes no weight lifting, only bodyweight exercises. I'm basically doing cardio, sprinting, bodyweight exercises, shadowboxing, and dieting. I'm not starving myself that badly with my food control. I'm just watching what I eat. No snacks/excessive sugar, no white bread/rice (only whole wheat or brown rice), more fish and poultry than red meat, more veggies and fruits. I'll be taking vitamins during my dieting too so I should be pretty safe.

As for strategy, I'm faster than him so I figured textbook boxing should work. Just keep moving and stick him with my jab when he rushes in.

Im 19 too, I just had this same problem last week and this week.

Should you train? Well answer these questions:

Fever/Breathing Problems/Chest Pain: NO! Your body is already trying to fight off something serious enough, so training can cause your body to overheat and thats pretty bad. Also consider that when you work out and break down muscle, your body uses antibodies to repair those... dont stretch your immune system too thin. If you train while you may have some infection or a virus then it could escilate to something worse.

Runny Nose/Small Cough/General Cold: Go ahead, the training could help you fight it off a little but still dont over do it. Also, dont go to the gym and spread your germs around like a jerk.

For getting in shape keep up the cardio... lifting light weights definetly wouldnt hurt. Try to get 1.5g of protien per pound of bodyweight and no more than 100g of carbs per day.

                Good Luck.

Alright, I'll give my cold a couple more days and then I'll do some light workout to get my body used to it again. I don't have a gym to go to either so I just do roadwork (I counted the miles) and stuff at home so I can't spread the sickness to anyone else, lol.

My cardio seems to be pretty long and tedious (from 2 to 4 miles depending on the day). I'm fine with my sprinting and anerobic running, but am I overdoing it at 4 miles?

Good job, dont want it to get any worse, thats for sure.

Well, if your cardio seems long and tedious its probably one of two things:

1: It IS long and tedious

2: You need an mp3 player or something.

If you listen to music you like while running then it'll make it seem a little easier. But, how long does it normally take you to run 2-4 miles? 30 minutes of good med-fast paced running before a weight training session should treat you pretty good. After about 2 weeks of it you'll notice a stamina change, then you can run at a higher intensity or for a longer period of time. Dont let your body plateu.

The general rule is if you feel like youre over doing it, then you probably are. However, when youre weight training and doing cardio then take into consideration the weights will get your heart pumping just as well. Also, do cardio before the weights as a warm up instead of after.

My workout goes something like this:

*Light stretches* Make sure its light, because you dont want to stetch cold muscles.

15-25 minutes (sometimes more, depending on my schedule) of high intensity cardio. After being out of the gym for over a week I may lower the intensity and just run for a little longer, vice-versa after a while.

Longer stretches... arms and legs. Get the blood flowing through the muscles, now that youre warmed up its easier to stretch and good for the muscles.

After that I go through a normal full body workout routine.

Well the running with no music doesn't bother me or anything, I'm fine with it. My runs are usually 20 to 30 minutes depending on distance and I've already upped my pace and distance from when I started.

And you say do light stretches and then long stretches. I do a run and then I shadowbox afterwards for a few rounds. Should I do the long stretches before or after the shadowbox? I'm guessing before would be better.

Yeah, go ahead and stretch before you shadow box. It'll get that blood flowing through all of your muscles. It also helps keep your muscles feeling "fresh" not as tired or anything. You may notice that it helps with your speed and stamina.
