My wife finally made me see this movie... anyone else seen it?

Anyone else think it's pretty wrong for a grown man to see a young girl on the street and then basically steer her life into prostitution? Or that the story would romanticize and justify it by saying, "it's ok, she *loves* him".

It's really weird how the women of the world can watch this stuff and call it a romance, and at the same time slam me for thinking scifi and Jet Li movies are masterpieces.

It was the culture in Japan at the time. Wrong or not, it's what was happening there.

My wife thought Unbreakable was great, and that Memiors of a Geisha was drawn out and very close to boring.

Most cultures, including our own, didn't start seeing women as people until recently. In addition to that, in WWII Japan, a 13-14 year old girl is considered an adult. Once again, until recently, the theory has been that if you can have babies, you can get married/have sex/do all that adult stuff. Wrong, sure. But atypical? Probably not.

At first, I didn't think I'd like that movie. But after watching it, I thought it was actually pretty good. Yeah, the culture in Japan is much different than ours, especially back then. I didn't read too much into the leading a girl into prostitution thing though.

However, stepping outside of that movie...you have to admit, that girl is pretty attractive!

Altimas - agree totally. It was sad to see Jet start doing so much wire work when he doesn't have to. He's the shizz wireless.

That's like saying Schindler's List depicts acceptable behavior because that was the culture of the region at that time.

Wrong, sure. But atypical? Probably not.

PS, the book was much better than the movie.

Well, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it's wrong to make the movie; I just think it's wrong to romanticize it.

The most disturbing part of the movie was how long and boring it was. It is one DVD we have that will never be watched again.

Well, the way I see it, I think most people have a hard time accepting it because we're too stubborn with the belief that our way of life is the only way of life. There's much to learn from other cultures which can be just as beautiful as ours. It's not like our culture is free from criticism either.

i havent seen it, but if its the movie i think it is, which i'm almost positive it is, then the village scenes were shot in my town.

and i heard all the actors were chinese; when geisha is a japanese thing.

American cultural movies are the same, look at Pretty Woman, making a movie about a hooker and romanticizing it.
They just forget to mention or edit the part where Richard Gere's charactor finds out that he has contracted herpes and his wallet is missing. Movies (especially romance) are just escapism.
