New Hobby, from paintball, to Motorcycle

Well I've been out of paintball really for a little over a year...not playing and all that. I still have not gotten rid of all my stuff....just stuff like barrels, tanks loaders packs...ect I still even have that Custom viking, but it never gets used...heck it's been months since I have even pulled it out of the gun bag to looks at...it's so sad to...heres a reminder on it:

But here is what is taking all my free time...and needed time Now:

Suzuki GSX Katana 750, Gold 2001. Picked it up for $2200 (cheaper then my viking was) it's in great operating condition and had just under 9k miles. it's been dropped so it has scratches on the fairings, but you can't tell unless your looking for it. Plus I will not feel so bad if I drop it...it being my first bike and all. I've had it for a week now and I've put 500 miles on it going back and forth to school and work and rides. I am really enjoying it. Though I could crave a bit more power so I can see my self getting a new bike in 12 months once the insurance runs out on this one. Looking at maybe a Kawasaki ZZR1200...I'm a Big guy at 6 foot 4 inches, so I can more then flat foot big bikes ( my knees still bends on this one, while most people tip toe it) So yah, comments welcome....

Sweet. I love riding. It's great when your mode of transportation is also your favorite toy.

DEFFINATLY an upgrade in hobbies. Just remeber take it easy out thier and keep the rubber side down. And i HOPE you spent a good $ on your gear and not cheaped out like some morons.

I been rideing myself for 2 years now and 15,000kms (9,320 miles). Started on a borrowed 650cc single cruiser then got my first and current bike a 650cc V-twin cruiser (2000 Yamaha V-Star Classic). And plan on a new bike next season (funny enuf again a 650cc LOL) either a Suzuki V-Strom 650 or a BWM F650GS Dakar.

For gear I have a Full face Icon Helmet, Joow rocket Mess/leather with re-enforced plates jacket ( with removable liner), Icon boots, Carbon nukkles and reenforced leather gloves...and always long pants. Spent about $600 on gear...I could have spent more on the helmet by buying a aries, but I could not find one that was as comfortable as the icon...plus the icon was more then half the price.

Bear... deff look into the V-strom. That's a biking I was looking to get. Stay away from BMW though. While they are nice bikes, the problem of getting parts looms over your head like a grim reaper. Parts are hard to get and VERY expensive, just not worth it IMO. The V-strom is a great touring type bike, that has sport in it. It demands a specific type of rider, as it does not appeal to the primary population of riders. But V-twins deff have more power then the straight 4's, so you will see the difference on the turns. ( SV650's are cool for that too)

Insurance only costed me $292 for the YEAR. I paid it off all at once. I plan to keep this bike till the insurance runs out then buy the bike I really wanted...either a kawasaki zzr1200, ZX-14, Busa, or when Suzuki releases the new 1600cc busa. Bottem line...my next bike will be all out and I plan to keep it for a while, so I will prolly buy NEW.

I aint worried maintenece wise on any bike (im a mehcanic for a living) parts are pricy yes on the bmw but its ALOT more capble in the dirt and a mutch nicer long haul bike. It also has a mutch lower center of gravity with the fuel tank under the seat witch makes it a VERY nice handeling bike. They put out 50hp from a little 650cc SINGLE cylinder witch is plenty for that style bike.

I like the V-Stroms ALOT but want soemthing a bit more dirt worthy. may also just keep my V-Star and get a used Kawasaki KLR 650cc and mod it for proper turing and off road duty.

Sound like your gears alright but might i recomend you get some sort of leg protection other than just reg jeans or pants. Personally i been wanting to get a pair of Draggin Jeans but right now i have leather chaps.

I've always wondered why most motorcycle manufacturers don't list mpg statistics for their bikes.

I believe Buell does, but thats the only one I've seen.

They weigh less than 500lbs(at least a good chunk of them) and make what 90hp for the bigger ones?

So the power to weight is rediculous. Who cares about MPG on one.

BTW my 1200 Sportster gets 40+ mpg has cost me a grand total of $30 for the last 600miles worth of gas.

Harley davidson has them market MPG for the buell's because there 500CC Buell blast is marketed directly for fuel ecconomy since it gets 75 MPG..it's basically a scooter with bike styleing, not very fast.

I wear BDU's when I wear leg protection..or paintball pants, lol. Chaps...I'm sorry but no I'm not a dork. I do plan on buying some real protective pants from Joe Rocket latter, but the legs are often the least mauled place on the body for motorcycle crashes...I've really looked into it. It can damage your knees...but thats from the impact, and not even hard pads will soak that up. Your just looking for abration protection, and the primary place your going to be sliding is on your upper tourso and lower legs ( boots) and head, as well as hands as you try and reach out. Those places I have protected very well. I will not be one to wear shorts, but you almost might as well. Since unless your wearing normal fabric, it will not take much beating on abrasion.

The Katana is giving me 40 MPG right now, I'm happy with that. it's one of the primary driving reasons to get a bike...since my car does less then half that.

I'm sorry I guess I'm biased I hate BMW bikes for both styling and design. They do not score well on the charts either. There are allot of options out there, I just always shy away from them, cause theres no reason to go to them.

Thats the dumbest argument I've ever heard for not wearing the proper gear. If you lowside, its highly possible, your whole leg and foot will stay pinned under the bike while sliding. Most road rash happens on hips and butt. Its your body's natural center of gravity. Just admit, you think you're too cool to wear leather pants when u go out, or too cheap.

Again, If anyone is buying a busa, wait for 08'
