Need help on joining the army

ok so i signed my army contract for airborne ranger a couple weeks ago. And ive been talking to a lot of people that are in or have been in and they all told me that i should change it and get OCS in my contract to make officer. Anyone in the army or has been that can give any other opinions on it? Im supposed to talk to a couple of people that my mom works with whose kids have gone thru OCS and are now out of the army. Im also gonna talk to my recruiter about it this week hopefully. Im set to ship out jan 3rd but i think im gonna try to change my contract.

The first thing you should have done was brought someone with you to help you sign the papers.
Someone close to you that's already military, etc.

Good luck with changing the contract.

Get your tab first, then apply for OCS.

I think the first question is how long you're planning to stay in.

Secondly, if you're meant for OCS, you'll end up in OCS.

        Scouts out.

            Absolutely!

The "green to gold" (if they still call it that) officers are worth 10 of the others anyday.

I was in for a total of 12 years. 6 Army and 6 Navy. And in 12 years, the best officers were the ones that were enlisted first. It gives you perspective on how things SHOULD work. Not the way the "book" says it should. Makes it easier to relate to the people that you have authority over. My advice is to go enlisted first. Then, if you see that you want to stay in longer, re-enlist for OCS. You will get a better deal from the Gov. that way.
WOW, sigs. Havent seen these in a while here on AO.

wow, a lot of the people i have talked to so far have told me to get OCS right away. And its coming from a bunch of people, 2 of which retired 20 years out and did OCS and are now working FBI. Ill have to think it over a little more and see what options are best.

As for how long im in, it really depends on how my first 4 years or so are gonna be. I wanna stay in, but it depends on if i like it or not.

do you know what you need to qualify for OCS? Im not sure for the Army but for NAVY and CG you need to have at least an associates degree. your profile says you wer born in 87, so i find it hard to belive youve got a degree already.... like i said I may be wrong I know nothing about ARMY.

You should be illegible for OCS when you get to E-6. On a fast tract program you'll get there in 4 yrs. Its a good idea to be enlisted first and see if you like the Army life.

Ranger is pretty tough, just dont quit. Dont forget to tape or brace your ankles during night jump

                      Good luck!!

When did they start letting people with associates degrees go to OCS? As far as I was aware, every service but the army requires a bachelors, and the army required you to be close to getting a bachelors and committed to getting it soon in order to go. Almost having an associates degree isnt even good enough to get you to go in as e-4. Then again, they have been drastically lowering the standards for everything in order to hide the fact that they cant recruit anywhere close to what they need if the standards were as high as they were before the wars.

at least in the CG all you need is an associates, ive been looking into it lately cause im thinking of making the switch. And the CG has NO problem filling their quotas. we have to have people wait for a year in alot of cases to go to boot camp, because we just cant train that many people at one time at TRACEN Cape May.

I'm pretty sure OCS requires 60 credit hours first. Here is the thing young one. WHY are you joining? If you wat to jump from planes, crawl in the mud, shoot lots of weapons, kick in doors and be elite...keep what you got. If you go OCS, you MAY still get that chance to do the cool stuff, but when you recieve your commision, you don't have a lot of choice where you go. Also, you cant't go to Ranger Bat as an officer until you are a 1LT with a succesful platoon leader service behind you. Even then, you have to be accepted into the Rangers and then go through ROPE. No gurantee you will get your Ranger Tab through OCS or even get slotted in the Infantry.
So young padowan...it all comes down to what YOU want out of the Army. Make no mistake, you WILL deploy, and you will deploy more than once in 4 years. It's a different world than when I enlisted 16 years ago.
Bottom line...what do YOU want to do?
Consider that your first sage advice from a Platoon Sergeant.
