I would wait until they are readily for sale on ebay for about 10% higher than retail. Honestly, you know the high price is just artificial demand created by sony for hype and to gain free advertisment with a sense exclusivity? All which in turn helps people think a console sold at actual retail is a bargain Do people really think there is a shortage of PS3's and sony can't produce enough?

sony sales officer speaking to sony CEO in broken englis/chinese...
Domo domo... we were wong in estiwating te US consumair base. We cannot pwoduce dem faast enough. What should we do your majesty?
      yeah right

Hey all you Californians... see that oil derek oil rig out on the Pacific horizon? That's actually about 513 cargo ships carrying nothing but PS3's and illegal immigrants. (mostly PS3's)
      And they're just waiting...

^^^Yes, there is a shortage on PS3s. Sony doesn't create any kind of hype just to increase the value of their PS3s. As is, they're already losing about $300 per unit sold. It doesn't make any sense to lose so much per unit then try to limit the sales. As is, Sony is banking on the PS3 to push the rest of their home electronics. Not to mention pay off the debts from the R&D of the Blu Ray player and Cell processor.

The shortages are also related to how many blue lasers they're able to produce. It's new technology and with new technology comes new manufacturing processes. They haven't reached a point where the yeild is enough to satisfy the amount they need to meet the demands.

Wow...it's amazing how many anti-Sony people are out there. Gotta love the conspiracy theories. Oh, might as well blame Microsoft too for the shortage of 360s last year. And let's not forget the number of Nintendo Wiis that sold for double as well on ebay. Heck, let's blame the whole gaming industry for creating such hype!!!

That is hilarious. Sony is not losing any money. If you are talkin about maybe the first 300 that are sold then yes, but in the end I promise sony will be making bank on these. No buisness would stay open if they kept releasing products that they were not making money on.

Do I want a PS3 yes. Will I pay 2,3 or maybe even 4 grand for one. NEVER. I just picked up a 360 for 250. Yes I had to wait a year, but who cares. I refuse to be the demand that keeps systems costing hundreds or thousands of dollars.

If I were you I would place it on Ebay. There are tons of 12yr olds that have mommies permission to get one for themselves for christmas.

They are banking on making money off software sales. The same model Microsoft is using. SHEESH! Do I have to explain everything?!

BTW, do you honestly think Microsoft isn't losing any money off of 360 sales? It's just now that they say they are only breaking even.

Gibby is absolutely right, the business model for these systems is to make money on the software, while losing money on the hardware (at least for now). In that respect, the XBOX360 did better, as many of the PS3's were bought with no games, as they were intended purely for resale. That is why the installed user base is so important, too, as a larger base generates more game sales.

But to answer the original question. I would pay $499 + tax for your PS3.

I agree that they are loosing money now on the hardware. Initial costs on any program/software/hardware/buisness will show that any product is selling for less than it cost to make during the initial startup. Sony tellling the public that they are selling for 300 less than what they cost to make only makes us "consumers" feel good about our purchase. Think about it. No one wants to put money in something that they think is going to depreciate quickly.

I would bet my mag that Sony is going to make money, or they wouldn't have produced this gamming consoul. Every preceding system in the past has always turned huge profits, and I doubt that is going to change anytime soon.

As for Sony depending on making money on software. Its all the same IMO. Thats like saying McDonalds is loosing money on fries, but making the difference by consumers buing a coke to wash it down. A meal is a meal. Everyone who buys a PS3 is going to buy a game also. Either way Sony is going to get your money.

Yes, they will make money. In fact, the videogame division is the only part of Sony that makes money. But your original statement was that Sony wasn't going to lose money on the console, which just isn't true. I forget exactly how many games they need to sell per console to make a profit, but they will probably make it.

If you look at each console as a single item they may be in the red. You really have to look a the whole business unit as a whole. They spend money to launch a product, then make money over the long term, a lot of money.

the PS2 took four years to turn a profit off the system itself (not including games)

makers generally subsidize the cost of the sytems. the REAL money is in the software, the games, the accessories. They sell the systems on the "cheap" in hopes it spurns a lot of interest for the games & accessories - that's where the real money maker is.

Same thing is done with cell phones and cell carriers. We don't make any money on the handset - in fact, we lose money. But we make our money on the service and additional stuff.
