Hazing the apprentices?Originally posted by Lohman446I said 83, not 84 darn it. I need the right part
. Ask for a thermostat for a Corvair instead.
I sent one of the guys (the "gopher") to get muffler bearings from the dealer once for his Chevy. They told him he had to go to Ford, so he went to Ford. Ford told him he needed a part number....Comment

I used to do this to the younger Marines tha just got out of boot camp comming to Okinawa.
Sent them to the armory to get the keys for the NBC Hum-vee.
Armorer made the Marine sign out a NBC suit, put it on all the way to MOP level 4 (think 3 layers of hot clothing and a gas mask under the Okinawa sun at 1300 = 120 degrees give or take!)
Had him RUN down to the motor pool and ask the dispatcher (who was a Gunny) where he could find keys to the NBC Hum-vee.
My CWO comes walking into my office about an hour later,... "So I got a call from the SNCOIC over at the motor pool about a lost set of keys to an NBC Hum-vee,... know anything about that?"

Yeah i'd say jerk but it's still funny ... you already know that some of those guys don't know anything about cars other than their own ...
again it was mean but funny ...
... and on hazing the apprentices ... i guess i was smarter than the average apprentice when i started working on vehicles ... my dad already sent me on those shenanigans at a young age ... so living very close to the shop i just went home for a couple of hours similar mission... i came back and say they didn't have it at autozone, napa, pepboys, hi/lo, dealerships, or the junkyard ...Comment

Next mission: Ask for a price quote for forged connecting rods (not those crappy cast ones) for a Mazda RX-8.
If they can't find it, tell them to look for RX-7 connecting rods, that those will work too.Comment

The RX series of cars used a rotary engine. Rather than individual round compression chambers there were three (actually six, because there were two rotors) compression areas in a big circle that were seperated by a triangular rotor. The engine firing forced the rotor to spin (in turn turning the crankshaft) and creating power rather than in a normal engine where it pushed the piston down. There is no connecting rod in a rotary engine. If I recall correctly they were also called a Weinkenfeller engine (or some such) based on the man who designed them. Never actually took one apart as they are incredibly expensive (and limited in getting parts) to repair.Originally posted by teufelhundenI got the Vette and Bug ones, but I need this RX7/8 one explained plz <3 :)"Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. I have next to zero knowledge, but I do believe it has to do with the Rotary Engine style...there are no connecting rods.Originally posted by teufelhundenI got the Vette and Bug ones, but I need this RX7/8 one explained plz <3 :)
