Cell Phones

Once again, I'm coming to AO for advice...

I've had the same stupid motorola phone for a few years now. Horrible camera, big and fat, awkward, and the buttons and menus aren't good either. I want a new phone.

Ever since I first saw the Matrix, I've wanted a slider phone. Imagine my dismay when I realized that flip phones became popular, and I never thought I'd get a slider phone. But wait! There are slider phones?
I've started looking at a few, such as the Motorola Rizr Z3 and Samsung D900.

Having a slider phone isn't an absolute deal breaker though, so I'm also taking a look at things like the Samsung Sync and Ericcson W810.

I'd like to ditch my ipod and carry my music in a cell phone if possible, which is why I'm looking primarily at the more expensive media phones. I've already got a *functional* phone, but I want something a bit more usable. My phone just annoys the hell out of me in too many ways. It has long delays between every button I press, and the sound quality is pretty much... well, I have to say "what?" a lot, and I have the volume up all the way. It's horrible.

While size isn't the biggest concern for me, I would like the phone to be small and compact.
Battery life isn't the largest concern for me either as I plug my phone in almost every night.

What is important to me is style, Ease of listening to music, and ease of use.
I'm really kinda leaning towards the D900, even though it's the most expensive up there, just because it actually has a 3.13 mp camera on it, and not just a little thumbnail picture taker. Oh, and it's a slider. Don't forget, slider's get that extra *cool* factor, at least in my head.

I use my cell phone right now primarily for calls and texting. If I got, say, the D900(just cause I'm leaning towards that), I plan on using it for pictures and definitely for music. I don't have internet access in my phone plan. Assume for all effective purposes that I will not be getting a phone with a new plan, so price comes out of pocket. The reason is that I'm on a family plan, and my mom doesn't want to renew the subscription and get locked into another two years.

As far as what I'm willing to spend, Nothing over $300. For sure. At first, I thought I'd find something cheap on ebay or craigslist, then I saw the rizr for $210, and gradually got my mind to accept that price range, and now I'm sorely tempted by the D900, but nothing over $300. Please. Saving money is good, but I am willing to spend a bit more on this. I've never had any cell phone other than one of the "free with a plan" phones.

Also, I use cingular, and was wondering, if I'm not using my phone for internet access, how important is the new G3 network thing they're mentioning a lot.

Oh, and I'm not really interested in anything with a qwerty pad, although if you sell the idea well, I might take a look.

What do you all use, why, and what would you recommend if you were me?

I just got a T-mobile Dash Windows mobile. Its pretty awesome.
The one I would want if I had Cingular is the Treo 750 touch screen Windows mobile.

I was using the Sony ericcson model s710.great phone, took nice pics and held mp3's I Wanted a new phone so at xmas time I went looking and was all about the Motorola 8225. Has windows mobile all the bells and whistles. Got in the store they sold the last one earlier in the day so I ended up with the crackberry pearl. This is a great phone. Takes great pics'holds mp3's and allows me internet when I'm away from my computer. If you text a lot you may want to look into a qwery type phone its so much easier to type and faster also. G3 is only good if you use your phone for internet. Will not make any difference if you only text. Texting still goes across the GSM network.
Good luck in picking a new phone.

I just picked up a Samsung BlackJack (i607) and I'm pretty impressed with it so far.

I have a Samsung D806...very similar to the D900...well from the pics I just looked up. I have to say I am very happy with this phone, I get service in places I could never dream of getting service with my other phone (both suncom GSM) and it has so many features it's great...oh and fun to slide.

I see the main difference in the two visually is the D900 has a hump at the bottom..

Well, maybe I'm just a little too excited, but I just finished ordering a brand new D900 off ebay, got a 2gb microSD and a little audio adapter that'll let me plug in headphones for the mp3 capabilities. I'm excited.

I've also spent about... 10 minutes browsing the howard forums, and WOW. I'm even more excited. There's links to mods to shore up the few weakpoints my phone has (firmware doesn't save pictures to memory card, but on-phone memory only. mod saves pictures to card, etc.) I'm so excited... I can't wait til it gets here. It's doubly hard using my old phone knowing I have something on the way.

Thanks AO!

here ya go d900

I'm using the moto krzr, I like it better then the past moto phones, but it suffers from a verizon UI. IMO if you're not getting a sweet deal then you should be using GSM. I'm obviously the latter.
It has a 1.3 mp camera
players MP3's via micro SD.
And I've managed to upload my own videos. I've currently got 2 episodes of southpark and phils "global warming swindle video".

It's not really that special....

i mean my k1m, the d900 is better then motos rokr z6 and the d900 is already on the market. I'm constantly disapointed with moto and especially verizon, I'm seriously so bummed about how weak their phones are compared to GSM. I even get a 15% discount with them and am still onsidering leaving them. IMO unloacked GSM phones are the ONLY way to go.

This post made me curious. I now pay .15 cent for each text message I send or receive, with no option to block them and .50 for picture messages with no option to block them, but here's the real kicker. I get charged minutes for calling my voice mail. I mean, heh, maybe it's just me, but you'd think my own number would be IN calling or?
Oh and this is fun too. I bought my k1m for 170$ they are now 99$ from verizon with a 2 year contract, which if you break you will be paying another 175$ for. So for 70$ less you can get the SAME phone but if you have a problem with them (lets be fair, like all carriers you will because they own you for 2 years) it'll cost you.

I pay $10 a month for 400 texts and 1MB of online data transfer. Each media(picture, video, etc.) message just uses one of my 400 texts. I believe I get charged minutes for voicemail too, but usually I'm only on it for a minute or two. Plus... we have thousands of rollover minutes

i think woot.com has a pretty decent phone going for like $50 right now.
