So I was cruising youtube tonight and found a particularly good video. It's in anti-english talk, so bear with it. It talks about the different guns he will be shooting then goes on to explain that a gunshot has a "gas/gun sound" and a "supersonic sound" (if supersonic).
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/NyqZPXIASqo"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/NyqZPXIASqo" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Basically, the point is to show how a Silencer is not quite like the movies. A silencer can silence the gun superbly, but the report of a supersonic bullet will still be VERY loud. This is shown with the normal 9mm demo omn the first gun - basically no net change when the silencer is added. But as you can see, a subsonic 22LR with a supressor is DRASTICALLY quieter with only the clatering of the slide. James Bond anyone?
It's not just because the 22LR is a smaller round either - becasue late in the video he shows some (presumably weaker handloaded) subsonic 9mm cartridges which have the same silenced effect as the 22LR. He also fires a 22LR from a rifle as well (supersonic) to show that the 22LR supersonic is not-so-silenced, even though the same round is quieted in the pistol. The Graph near the end of the video shows the 3 different ammunition velocities and the sound barrier line in red - very helpful vid indeed and gives a realistic view top silencers.
Basically, keep the bullet subsonic, and you can almost silence the gun. If not, your wasting your time. Although a subsonic 22LR might not have much manstoppage... I'm sure a subsonic 9mm could ruin your day.
