Or is that an urban legend?

I made a pretty effective 'silencer' for my pellet gun in highschool. It was quiet enough that I could drop birds in my neighbors yard while he was about 10 feet away (on the other side of shrubs)...never knew the wiser.

It would help, as has been noted by the video you are only going to effectively silence subsonic rounds anyways.

That being said, I own a metal lathe, so I can come up with something better

This is a pretty good design. Not that I would ever try to make one

I made a silencer for a paintball gun, it was pretty bad *** and worked really well too. I just used pvc for the main bore and ABS for the outer part to keep it light. Steel wool was used as the dampening material.

I made tons of them and sold them on e-bay at one time (made a pretty good haul for a higschooler doing it... about $20 a pop!) I would take an empty aerosol can, pry off the crimped top, chucked it in the lathe and punched a hole in the end using the live center in the tailstock, pack it full of fiberglass insulation and use 3/4 CPVC for the inside tube. Drill or cut tons of slits in it, stuff it into the empty aerosol can, put some silicone on the end to seal it up and paint it and you've got a nifty little silencer for your paintball gun. They worked suprisingly well especially for closed bolt pump guns!

Edit: I also built these roll cages for T-Maxx R/C pickups that were made out of 3/16 cold rolled rod and made a killing off of those too... there was less than like $3 worth of materials in them and I could make one in about a half an hour and sell it on e-bay for $60 or so. I should have taken advantage of that one more than I did though... I only made and sold about 5 or 6 of them. Now the market is flooded with them and the price is wayyy down.

Keep in mind that paintgun silencers are illegal and I would not recommend admitting to making one on a public site like this. The ATF has gone after people for their paintgun silencer and the fines and prison times are pretty stiff.

HOWEVER, the ATF has declaired that if the silencer is permenently attatched to the paintgun (silencer and barrel cannot be removed) then it is ok. BUT if it is ever removed then you have just commited a federal offense.

                          http://www.atf.gov/alcohol/info/revr...ling2005-4.pdf

It is possible to register a paintgun silencer (or any other silencer for that matter) but you have to have a background check, the local police chief must sign the paperwork, and the Federal Government must approve it. OH, ALSO NOTE THAT YOU MUST *MUST* GET PRIOR APPROVAL FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT (ATF) *BEFORE* MAKING IT. This requires a $200 payment to the Feds giving you the "tax stamp" and a certificate of ownership. Anyone who can legally own a firearm can also own a silencer, sawed off shotgun and machineguns (made prior to '86). These are what are refered to as "class 3 weapons". There are exceptions to this made by some states (I think California is one).

KEEP in mind that the penelty for possessing such an item without it being registered with the Federal government runs a $250,000 fine, 10 years in prison, or both.

If anyone has more questions on this I have done a LOT of research on the subject and would be more than willing to discuss. Just pm me.

Did I say silencer??? I meant "barrel extension"

That's what I had to call them on e-bay too...
