If you want a piston-driven AR, the POF-USA version seems to be doing well. DSA sells it as well as POF-USA themselves. You won't like the price, though.

It's cheaper than the HK 416, which, as I understand things, is in the $2000 neighborhood for just the upper receiver. That's assuming HK would sell you one.

What's wrong with a standard M4 clone? It's pretty handy, lightweight, lots of accessories to hang off it, if that's your thing, and should be perfectly reliable if you keep it moderately clean.

AKs are always nice, too. An AK-74 type would be even less expensive to buy and feed. A decent quality version should be fairly accurate, too.

I recently added an Arsenal SLR-106FR (5.56 NATO, side-folding buttstock, Bulgarian AK) to the collection. A bit on the spendy side, but pretty nice. I put a Russian (made in Belarus) PK-ASV red dot sight on it, because my eyes, post-LASIK, don't agree with standard AK rear sights.
      God gave you a soul.
      Your parents, a body.
      Your country, a rifle.

      Keep all of them clean.

Wow, decisions, decisions.. I'll take one of each please!

The Remington 700 is a SWEET action. You also can't go wrong with the Savage that was mentioned above. They are a little less expensive and have very similar performance to the 700. The 7mm, 300WM, or 338 are all excellent long range chamberings. Of course how much you plan on shooting (and what you plan to shoot with it) will weigh heavily on what you plan to buy in terms of chambering.

7mm, 300WM, 338 are big dollar rounds. Think $1-2/shot with high quality ammo. If you reload your own then that will go a long way towards cutting the cost if you plan on shooting a lot. If you are going to be hunting or are just want to be competitive in the accuracy department then a bolt action, heavy barrel, with a synthetic stock rifle will be out-of-the-box accurate enough for most of your needs. Plan on spending a LOT on optics though, at least the cost of the rifle. 308/30-06 are great rounds out to about 500yds. Beyond that they drop hard and lose velocity and they can be a bit "unforgiving", however, 750+ yards with a .308 isn't impossible, it just takes skill and lots of practice.

5.56/.223 is a great performer below 300yds but beyond that it loses a lot of punch and drops like a stone. But since you are planning on an M4 Carbine style rifle in the AR15 platform long range accuracy isn't exactly your first requirement. The ammo is also a lot less expensive then your other choices so you can spend more time at the range "plinking". You can find excellent platforms in the M4 for less than $1000.00. DPMS, RRA, Stag Arms, Bushmaster, all make entry level AR15/M4 rifles in that range and all are excellent quality rifles.

Springfield M1's are great collectors pieces and you can find Korean war/WWII era M1s for a lot less than NIB. However, they will have some "character" and you will have to be knowledgeable on how to check the throat and chamber to make sure they haven't been shot-out. IMO M1's are great wall-hangers but they aren't everyday shooters. They are nostalgic and cool though and a lot of people still use the new ones for competitive shooting. If you can stomach the price then an NIB M1 is a great all-around performer that is built like a tank and chambered in a battle proven cartridge, the venerable 30-06.

            In short IMO and IME:
-Driving tacks at over 500 yards then go with the bolt action 300WM/338/7mm. 308 if you plan on spending a lot of time behind the trigger.
-CQB, plinking around 300-500yards, inexpensive practice - M4 or other AR platform
-Old school, rugged, battle rifle - Springfield M1A

Enjoy! Remember a bad day at the range is better than a good day at work!

Army and I suggest the nicer savage rifles as they are the best currently available sub MOA rifle for the buck.

however since you are "kickin it old school" I suggest a Marlin lever gun in 30-06 or something more desireable for your needs.

My newest Savage, Model 12 Long Range Precision Varminter single shot in .223.
1" diameter barrel all the way out, right bolt/left feed (which allows me to remain on the scope while loading).

Now, it's not cheap, going over $1000 after all taxes and DROS fees are paid, but for putting rounds on top of each other all day, or popping targets out to 500yds, it's still hard to beat.

Or, you could build a heavy AR for your needs:
That's a Shaw 24" heavy barrel with 1-14" twist. 2lbs of lead in the grip, and 6lbs of lead in the buttstock. Free-floated handguard and Rock River match trigger. While breaking in the barrel with NO scope mounted yet, it shot a little 1/4" cluster at 50yds...............yeah, it's a keeper

Seeing as you choice for rifles isn't drawn to any task in particular, I recommend something on the AR-15 platform...

Colt, Bushmaster, Rock River, DPMS plus a slew of others make a variety of configurations. But the best part is cheap and redily available 5.56 (.223 Rem) ammo!

well i couldnt let this rem 700 pass me up. the price was very good, just a jackson over 5. going out tomorrow. gonna take lots of pics. I got a simple fixed 4x scope to play arround with until I figure out something nicer (any suggestions?)

Also as far as my model '94 leveraction... one of the fellas at a local place said that FN bought the tooling and rights for it. Anyone hear about that?

Then as far as the piston... well watching that fella pull a AR-15 lookin thing out of sand then dunking it in water on future weapons...yeah that was just eye candy. Maybe I dont need it... but its like a Porsche 911 turbo sitting in Phoenix rush hour traffic. Because I'm an American and I can.

Now Ak's thats just unamerican. durka durka

                          Greetings From Coyote Springs Ranch!

(Thats really the name, <3 Arizona... I had to look it up on a USGS map)

My friends and I were out to have fun today. Being ridiculous was the goal. Of course my new 30-06. As for the rest...The green shells are 3" Slugs, the red are 3.5" Super mag 00 buckshot. The Ruger is on my hip on the other side. My Friend (taking the pic had my Glock otherwise it would be in the crossdraw on the vest.

                            Hey Moe,
Nice to see that you chose a very stable platform in the Remington 700. One of the best actions out there and the basis for a good number of the US Sniper rifles. There's a lot you can do with them. If you are looking for a target type stock, I'd advise you look into a company called Choate Machine & Tool. They have fiberglass bedded stocks with aluminum supports for a fraction of the price of an H&S or McMillan.

Anyways, that rifle will treat you well, but do learn this one lesson well. Never put a cheap scope on an expensive rifle or an expensive scope on a cheap rifle. Neither is going to give good results. Now I'm not saying you need to go spend a few grand on a nightforce scope, but I'd definitely look for a deal on a nice leupold scope.

If you do decide to get another rifle for riding, I'd suggest you look at some of the shorter marlin 30-30 lever action rifles. Great little saddle guns if you ask me. Or, Ruger now makes a newer rifle that I believe is called the M77 Frontier Rifle which is a short barreled bolt action rifle that is really sweet and you can get it in several different calibers.

I'm not clear as to whether or not you are using that rifle you got to hunt anything, or just long range shooting. If it is for long range shooting, you may want to take a look at having the rifle re-barreled to a .220 swift. It's one of the baddest varmint hunting rounds you can get. It's basically a 30-06 round necked down to a .223 bullet. It's known as a "barrel burner" because of how fast the round travels and due to that they used to eat barrels up very quickly. Anyways, there's a ton you can do with a remington 700 if you set it up correctly.
