      well... i'm posting late in this, but tape does work, there's a guy over at the Lapco forums that used to do it with no problems. he did get the occasional stright shot, but that was around maybe 1/10 shots. all i know was that he was using electrical tape for this.
      and paintballnewbie, the hard boiled would spin better because the entire thing is solid. raw ones dont spin well because the contents dont spin up as fast as the shell. so when you release the egg, the liquid will tend to try and slow down the spin

        *ding* you both get a cyber cookie.

        THATS why spinning paintballs don't work too well.

        i'm done talking in this thread, sorry.

        cheers!

        ahh, going to the field with only 500 balls...i love college.

          Akuma, you are missing the point.

          It has nothing to do with the fill spinning, like trying to stabalize a paintball through spinning.
          It only needs the surface to spin, and the interaction between the surface and the air. The fill spinning or not spinning will have no effect on this at all............

              Spin a paintball (two-tone shell so you can easily see the spin), then spin a hard-boiled egg. Which one spins "better", and by how much? Shell-fill coupling is far greater in a paintball than it is in a raw egg. As to whether the coupling is sufficient for gyroscopic stabilization caused by axial rifling, who knows... it's rather moot since paintballs are spheres and as such their ballistics don't benefit as much from gyroscopic stabilization as do bullet-shaped projectiles.

                Still not following you. Say the shape is that of a parabola. I know it's not but it's easier math that way. Then the equation is
                y=x^2

                y'=dy (or z or whatever)/dx=2x

                y''=2

                That's positive. The whole thing is concave up. If you wanna say it's more closely akin to say
                y=x^3, then you get the same thing.
                y=x^3
                y'=3x^2
                y''=6x

                (-infinity,0) it's concave down.
                (0,infinity) it's concave up. On the right half of this graph it's going the same direction as the barrel is.

                (BTW for some clarification to all you who might not get it- y=x^2 is like a U shape, and y=x^3 is a line that comes from the bottom left of the graph, does a little hump around the x-axis, then crosses through the origin, then an upside down little hump, and off to the top right.)

                WAIT- Wow I feel like a . Little mental lapse right through there. I was thinking that the barrel curved like the aforementioned parabola, but upon further inspection it IS more like an upside down one.
                Yeah, that curve is definately a negative y". But while TECHNICALLY it is a downward curve, I was thinking that what whats his name said earlier was that the barrel ended at a point below where it started.

                My bad!

                    dy
                    dx of this barrel would be interesting to know.I would if I had the time but some one should graph out the barrel from scratch and see if there actually is a normal looking quadratic to it.

                              also, one thing that was left out of the flatline description was this: The barrel diameter must be larger than the diameter of the paintball. This will alllow the paintball to lift up to the top of the barrel and roll on the top of the barrel. It must not touch both sides of the barrel,(top and bottom) or the effect is canceled. In other words, lousy ball to barrel fit.

                              And, as to the rate of fire for the Flatline. I've had three A5's, all with flatlines, two with E-grips and one with the RT. With the E-grip on Turbo, I could easily reach 12 - 14 bps with no breaks. BUT, the paint has to be small to medium size or you will get breaks in the barrel. When the flatline works, it is great, but there were days when you could not get it to work at all. I had a Bigshot for those days.

                                Dawg047,

                                Man, you really started one this time...

                                First, I have 5 micromags so I really want to see you succeed.

                                I think I read the article you mentioned. Are you doing this just out of curiosity? Have you shot an A5 with a flatline very much? I've found that the distance is a big plus, but the accuracy is so poor that I was constantly frustrated. It's good for throwing a lot of balls a great distance, and I have placed shots through underbrush using the flat tragectory.

                                So it's good if your target is far away, but to appreciate the flatline you should be shooting at targets 200' away. So at 280 fps, they will have almost 1 second to react before the ball reaches them. I can drop and find cover usually.

                                When your targets get closer, you lose the flatline distance advantage. I recently compared an A5 flatline and a 98C with JJ ceramic barrel. At about 130', the flatline shot straight but with a shot spread of propably 12"; the 98c had a grouping of about 6". This was a basic, "have some beer and give it a try" type test, but we all agreed.

                                So I think the flatline is probably the best "supporting firepower" I have seen. Which means that one guy with a flatline could hold back a whole squad while his team surrounds them. But if you've got a Micromag, don't you want to be up close and personal?

                                I'm just thinking that once you succeed with your project, you'll think "yeah, it works, and it still sucks."

                                How about working on an adapter so you can mount a 10-round PT Extreme magazine on the Micromag? I have a photo of one for the Micromag, and I actually have one that fits a 98c. I'll send you photos if you want.

                                Good luck.
