***Recball 101 - All please look***

    Guys,

I have been asked to take my churches high school group to play some paintball in a few weeks.

I have also been asked to take a friends junior high church group in a few months.

So I was thinking of putting a manual together. Or a how to. Or a tips and tricks. Just something that these kids could look at the night before to help them have a better time.

I am by no means an expert so I have decided to tap the collective knowledge bank that I call AO.

Any advice would be great to pass along. I will seperate it into proper categories assuming I get some input. I would like to even have a few illustrations (diagrams) if it is appropriate.

I think this would be useful to get new players into the sport and let them be able to hit the ground running instead of hiding behind a bunker crying.

I think most new players will be playing recball. Which to me consists of anything besides speedball.

So thats it. Lets see what you guys have to share with the future players of our sport.

When posting a tip or trick please do the following:

    - Explain it like you would be explaining it to someone who has no idea what you are talking about.

    - if a picture or diagram would be helpful please draw the picture. I'll take a picture of a sketch if you think it iwill be helpful.

Depends on what kind of ball you're playing.

      Suggestions so far:

      What to Wear/Bring:

      Long sleeve shirt
      Long pants
Shoes with ankle support if possible - (hiking boots, football cleats, etc)
      Microfiber cloths
Cup if possible - Not the drinking kind

      *Disclaimer*
Use old clothes that you don't mind getting VERY dirty and possibly stained or torn.

      Vocabulary:

-marker - The gun like item you use to fire the paintballs.
-hopper - The large bubble on top of your marker that holds the paint.
      -barrel -
      -barrel bag
      etc...

      Safety:

-Keep your goggles on at ALL times in "fire zones". Paintballs usually travel around 280 feet per second (190 mph)
-Keep your barrel bag/plug in at ALL times when not in "fire zones". There should always be something seperating your face and the barrel of your marker at all times.
-Don't overshoot your opponents- It only takes 1 break to eliminate your opponent.
-Never "blind fire". This is firing your marker around a corner or over an object with your head still behind that object. If you can't see what you are shooting at then you shouldn't be shooting at it.

      How to Aim your marker:

Position the tank on your shoulder. Lean the marker in (tilt the marker so the hopper is NOT pointing straight up), sight down the barrel. Keep your elbows tucked in
      **Pic would be helpful**

      While on the field:

Don't EVER take your mask off!
Make sure your hopper lid is closed tightly
      -Don't be afraid to move.
-Don't be afraid to get shot.
2- Don't all bunch up behind one bunker.
3- Don't pop out from the same spot twice.
4- Be sneaky, don't give away your position too soon.
6- Wait until you have a clear shot before shooting.
      7- Communicate with your teammates.
8- Dead men don't talk, except to say "I'm Out!" -When a player is hit, they must then raise their gun over their head, shout that they are OUT, and then quickly leave the field to the dead area. Be sure to keep your gun over your head and to shout that you are OUT whenever you come across new players.
      9- Don't get tunnel vision. (see 8)
Do not pick paint up off the ground
When in doubt, ask a ref. Thats what they get paid for.

      Stategies while on the field:

      1. Use cover as a diversion. Appear from behind a part of the cover, duck down, and move to another part. Your opponent will be focusing his attention on where you used to be - where he thinks you still are. Jump up and nail him, if he's close enough, or jump up and run to better cover if he isn't. Use the element of surprise.

      2. Use teamwork to keep an opponent trapped behind cover. With a teammate providing cover fire aimed at the object your opponent is hiding behind, you can approach undetected and find a better angle to tag him while he's still behind cover. If he realizes you are approaching and breaks cover to tag you, your teammate will tag him.

EX:2 people go together, and have one give cover while the other moves.

Player A and Player B are at 2 trees next to each other. There are 2 rows of trees in front of them and a player on the other team in back.

A shoots, B moves to next tree
B shoots, A moves to tree next to B
      lather, rinse, and repeat

      3. Learn total awareness. Don't focus your attention on a single spot, even if you think an opponent may be hiding there - a different opponent may be flanking you. Or you may locate an opponent you wouldn't otherwise have seen. Constantly survey your surroundings.

      4. Move. Standing still will get you noticed. Moving will keep your opponent guessing about where you could pop up from. Moving will get you to better positions. Try shooting first, then moving while your opponents are behind cover, to give yourself the most time.

      5. Move up field especially when your opponent doesn't see you. You can either shoot blindly, probably from out of range, or you can take advantage of the moment to move up field to where you could be more useful. Don't be afraid of moving up field - fear leads to hesitation, which could get you tagged.

      7. When you get to a new position, pause. Don't give yourself away immediately. Take a moment to survey the field from your new angle, determine if any opponents are within range, or if there's a better position you can run to.

      Paint maintenace:

paintballs can't be used if they get wet
Dont leave paint in the sun
Close your bag a paint when you dont need it.
Dont pick paint off the ground.

Look through APG mags and take out all the "First Time Playing Tips", and "How To Not Get Owned" articles they have in almost EVERY issue for newbs. Copy or re-type the good points in them and make your pamplets. Also, much of that kind of info is also on the web so either way your set.

I did the same thing for my cousin when I took him out for the first time. He absorbed everything well and had a blast. Good luck.

couple of things off the top of my head:

make sure people bring appropriate attire. suggest long sleeve shirts and long pants for those who have never played before.

because you are probably going to have a lot of first time players that will be renting, make sure that those who do have their own gear are out there tearing up your noobs.

make sure you stress SAFETY often especially goggle safety

also when it comes to attire, make sure people wear something that they dont mind if it gets stained, tore or just plain dirty. last time i was out at a paintball field, there was a group of people wearing their fashion 100 jeans and 80 dollar sweaters. all of them looked right of the shelves when they first started, not so by the end.

                    just to clarify.

You are saying instead of having the hopper pointing sraight up at a 90*. To tilt the marker to the left or right giving a clear line of sight down the barrel. Right?

Yup. If it's a friend that's never played before I demonstrate.

I forgot - Keep your elbows tucked in.

                              Just enforce safety:
Keep your goggles on at ALL times in "fire zones"
                              Don't overshoot your opponents
Wear a cup (if it's happened to you, you know)

and tell them that it is long range "tag" so they don't go "Alpha Leader" on you.
