Gripe about advertisements and sigs

Ok, this is an inevidable thread, lets get it over with.

1.) When you said advertisements I didn't think it was going to be a full 1/4 page at the beginning of every freaking thread AND I though it was going to be done proffesionaly, not offset by the length of the title with a nother 1/4 size gap on either side of it. I was thinking more of a BANNER ( you know, thin...streches accrost the better part of the screen type thingy ) and maybe at the top and/or bottom of the BIG pages, like the main and the forum main(s).

2.) Sig images are once again OUT OF CONTROL. While this usually doesn't bother me, the latest rash of HUGE sigs ARE TRASH effectivly making it a "rash of trash" (TM). Poor quality pics of guns, dogs, ppl, photo shop stuff from ppl that should touch the freaking program and well 2 page essays about who gives a flying cammel but you obviously feel the need to brag about it. Which brings me to point

3.) IF all these poor 56k guys were gripping then I don't see why they aren't griping now since there is roughly twice as much junk they have to go threw even AFTER the pic hosting was taken away ( because we all know it's not a hosting problem ).

Now I know this is a MAJOR gripe here, and I want to point out that I still consider AO a privilege but if you're gonna lie, get slopy, be selective about enforcing rules, at least don't make it so obvious that everyone can tell and have a reason to gripe about.

AND if your gonna gripe, have a plan how to make it better so:

1.) take sig pics away compleatly, or at least take code away so ppl can't link to them:
there are too many morons that don't read the rules obviously and the poor mods are having a hard time controlling the inherited PBN crowd that they don't have time to PM everyone one about the sig rules.

2.) Turn pic hosting on or off, or just say, we are running tests on bandwidth or something. Don't make us believe that AGD invented a time machine and give us a date when the "problem" will be resolved.

3.) CHANGE the freaking 1/4 sore eye and use a standart banner size in a centered format so we don't have to scroll down 1/2 to read the first reply to every thread.

I hope no one is offened by this I guess it is a tinnie tiney bit direct, but it's not meant to be degrading

The "banners" are extremely annoying. I would highly recomend listening to Heat and anyone else who replies to this thread...they need to be gone. If you cannot re-size them to standard "banner" size, please put them on the bottom of the page.

Sigs are another large issue. I am constantly IM'ing people trying to help them make their sigs smaller/cleaner. I am sick of scrolling own 1/4 of the page b/c some kid has dealt with 45 different pple and wants to have them scrolling across the screen in bright pink. Whatever happenned to size limits? I have seen quite a few recently that are much too big. For example, the guy with the white car(civic) in his sig...way too big IMO. The mods used to get pissed about tht kind of stuff.

I dunno, I didn't like the first re-make of the AO site(Orange Banners) but I have slowly gotten used to it. Now, these banners make the whole site look retarded, seriously. I thought something was wrong with the site the first time I saw them. Please change these banners! Oh well, that's just my opinion...and I understand it is somewhat juvenile.

EDIT: I have an idea, how about we make all of these people with sig images that are way to large have the "banners" as their sig image for a period of time. Thats too much advertising right there.

I'm a 56k user.

The banners aren't annoying at all, I don't see what everyone is yelling about... Sure it would be nice if they were the "standard size" but comeon, it takes NO time to load, and like 1 second to scroll past.

Same with sigs. Disable them if you don't like them. But as a 56ker the only thing that bothers me is if I see the same sig like 15 times in one thread thats just annoying. And I still don't notice the "2 page essays" or "Terrible photos"... Maybe I should pay more attention?

I sense a new competition coming...banner redesigning wins a warp. But seriously the offsetting of the forum is not good, I don't have any issues with my connection as such (occasionally AO will load slowly for me but that is more a case of my location than connection speed) the biggest annoyance for me with signature images however poorly done, is the constant use by people in every post they make in a thread. What Shartly has done here he left his sig image on the first post but removed it on the second..this is just good manners. If this thread makes it to a second page I would fully expect and have no problem with Shartleys sig image appearing again (not picking on shartley but as of now he is the only person to hold up for this)
The mods crack down on too big sig images and have done for some time this won't change, the pic hosting should be left off and the BIG BANNERS need to go. Have banners sure but a sensible size, the insertion of a new header frame would sort this out very easily.

while some of these don't violate the sig rules, they are good examples of BAD photo shoping AND combined with the rest of their sigs, they ARE wrong. And these are the sigs from 2 very small threads, under 20 posts total.

I wish Kosh would have said that the first time when all the 56Ker were complaining about the HUGE sigs.

how is this for an idea. keep ao free, but have an upgraded account. a few bucks a month and you can have sig images a neat "AO Supporter" tag and an avatar if you wish. the free accounts get no sig at all and certainly no avatar. i also dont mind the non-hosting of images in the posts. making people host them elsewhere and linking them here is a great idea. perhaps just making it clearer how to do that will cut down on the confusion.

Well lets see. I am still sort of thinking on this banner Add thing. I like the idea of them loading at the main page rather than each thread. If they are at all!

And as to signatures they getting harder and harder to police them all. Well... truth is the always are difficult. I rely a lot on you guys to find them for me and point them out. Because as I go through a thread I mostly am trying to look at the content and it would be impossible for me to keep moving around from forum to forum and thread to thread while ALSO clicking the properties of each ones signature image. And for the most part all of you do a good job helping us with that. Thats something we always relied on your involvment for. And it's appreciated if I do not say it enough. Thanks for that help. Often when I enforce it the violator has no idea and has not even read the rules. And often it deteriorates into a long drawn out argument. And someone about always accuses me of picking on them about it. But eventualy they get caught. Sometimes they even change them again and again and its a never ending chase to get them straight....

But it would not bother me at all to lose em all together really. I am all for something that makes EVERYONE happy. But unfortunately I have never seen a solution that does that. Someone is always of the other opinion.
