Hey all, and greetings from the second largest city in Iraq, Mosul. This will be the first of, I hope, a weekly update on things here from my point of view. I'll do what I can.
First off, Mosul is located in northern Iraq, not too far from the boarder with Turkey. It is getting colder here and has entered the rainy season. Temps range from the upper 60's during the day to the high 40's at night. This is a big relief compared to the 100+ temps when I left in August.
I am in Delta Company, 1/502ND Infantry Battalion of the 101st Airborne Division. A Delta company contains the Battalions anti-armor assets. This means we have the .50 Cal machine gun, the MK19 automatic grenade launcher and the TOW (Tube-launched Optically-tracked Wire-guided) missile. They are mounted on Humvees and we drive around Mosul conducting Stabilization and Sustainment Operations (SASO). I am a Platoon Sergeant in charge of a 16 man platoon with 6 Humvees. This is generally smaller than a standard Infantry platoon, but there are only so many seats in a Humvee! This week, my platoon and I are doing TOC (Tactical Operations Center) security and escort missions with the Battalion Commander. It's kind of a slow week but good because I am just getting my feet on the ground. I also had to inventory the entire Platoon's equipment and sign for responsibility for it. It's easily a couple million dollars worth of equipment. Now I just have to make sure I don't lose a Humvee!
If any of you have any questions, go ahead and post them and I will see what I can do. Some questions can not be answered due to Operational Security, but I will do my best. I am looking forward to getting back to the states is a few months and playing our great sport again. Until then, thanks for your well wishes and I'll see you on the 50!
