I just looked at the PRO REF link on the NPPL web site. It seems they are having a weekend class in Los Angeles to teach people how to ref. Its kinda wierd that they have a class to teach people and also a Now Hiring sign on the same page. Wow, all I need to ref an NPPL turny is $50 and a weekend. Are they desprite for refs or something? www.nppl.tv

meh, i wouldn't wanna take lessons from the refs we had at the NPPL we played at.
i understand they were doing their job, but some of the calls were a bit extreme - sometimes really unfair. The very existence of flamethrowers proves that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves. 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done.

You fellas have obviously never had to officiate a serious competiton...
We all see the world through our own narrow field of vision. Reffing something like an NPPL event is difficult and thankless. Everyone abuses officials; players, coaches spectators, everyone. They never believe that a refr has seen something they did not. At the end of the day no one other than event staff goes out of their way to thank officials.
Both of you fellows go ahead and ref a day. I don't think we will be reading the same stuff you are tossing out now.Comment

What a racket. Establish a system of Indentured Servitude. Have the servants pay you for the right to learn how to be a servant. And have the ability to hand-pick the best of those servants.
How much do NPPL ref make for a day of reffing an event again?

All in all, reffing is more demanding than actually playing. You need to be fast on your feet, willing to take a string of hits, put-up with players who just don't wanna listen, and you need to have your wits enough about you to notice when folks are doin' things they shouldn't.
I've reffed a PanAm tourney, and it had to be the most brutal day of my life, possibly also one of the most rewarding too in my paintball carier. Its also given me a lot of respect for the guys that go out and do it and I know that I'll never question a ref's call. In the end, they're just players, like you and me, helping out because its a job that needs to be done and no one wants to do it.
Training is nice, it gives everyone a point of refference, and it gives you a chance to look in on the wonderful world of wiping and know what to look for. If nothing else, for those of you that want to learn how to wipe, going to a major reffing clinic is the best place to learn how not to get caught.

If you are talking about the feeder event at Belle Fouche, hopefully that will never happen again. And i hope to see you at a couple events this year.
I think you get paid $80 a day or event and a "free" hotel room. I'd say you pay in welts though. I'm sure if that's accurate. I had a friend go ref in denver last year and I think thats what he said.
I took one of the classes, and have reff'd a major event (for Montana, that is) and some of what is in the course I don't agree with. But their good courses nontheless, especially since most fields here don't have regular reffing clinics.play for the game

reffing
I used to ref a local field a while back... I dont think i ever chaught a cheater.
I don't really belive that was my job, I mean catching wipers. I mean sure if I flat out saw some one wipe i would have called them out... but when its 3 refs with 20 on 20, and a field thats mostly out of the refs view...hills. Cheating isnt the bigest priority. The main priority was safty, making sure people chronoed at or under 280fps and yelling out "Keep your goggels on!" every time someone took their goggles off {evey 5 minutes}. Dodging paintballs was also fun.JUST PLAY.Don't Gripe

its funny but refs at actual events get shot less than recball refs!! you have the ones that you run through but never are you shot up just standing there!! its the recball refs that walk away hurting when some kid lights you up from 5 feet away!!VV04962 yeah thats my Pewter CnC X-mag

That is true. I sometimes help ref at my practice field and I get hit more times by the new player then by anyone else. Even if I am in my complete uniform I will still get hit up. But if it will help get me a free case of blaze I will take a few balls. But the worse is when they are yelling for a paintcheck and the guys shoot you for running up on them. I dont play that one.
And I usually get a good bye from the girls, sometimes even a number.

I love reffing, possibly more than playing. Gives you a whole new perspective on the game.
I've gotten in HUGE arguments with other players before, one was with my best friend of 16 years (I'm only 18), we fought for hours. But we shrugged it off at the end of the day, I was just doing my job.
The pressure of players who are "convinced" they sow something happen is intense, especially since they all have adrenaline blasting through their veins, and you're just calmly sitting there. Not to mention, they're holding markers, and what do you have? Possibly an Air Horn and a Walky-Talkie.
That being said, yelling at people is fun.

Also, in the PanAm, and this may have been true for the NPPL too, teams that reffed were given points for the event they reffed at instead of playing. I don't believe this is the case anymore, but it was something besides monetary compensation for the team's time.
In my experience as a ref for a big event you didn't get a whole lot of cash (if any), but you got left over cases of paint and other misc. gear on top of a few free spins at the field if you were a local.

reffing locally gets me free play, free paint, and cheaper gear. It's a nice deal, but I have to ref while my friends play and have fun - not so sweet.
I do want to take an official ref course so I can do events though, if only for the experience (since I know they can't pay enough)Comment
