yeah im going to have to say go drink a warm galss of stfu. im a nppl ref. i reffed denver, vegas and san diego, i also ref at dfwap (recball) i get shot 100 times more at an event then in rec ball. if ur a decent ref u will always get shot, players dont give a crap about refs, they arent going to stop there string of paint just cause theres a ref there. reffing nppl is fun but its also very hard. they dont call them pros for nothing, they are extremely good at cheating and its very hard to catch them, but we do a dang good job. tis great for us to have the class because there are a lot of rules that people need to be taught, i had been playing tournies for 2 or 3 years before the class and i learned a tremendous amount at the class. as for pay, its not great but its decent. im not sure if im supposed to disclose the amount but yeah. the nppl refs are the best out there because they arent biased. everyone else uses teams to ref there events cough psp cough and thats gay

      elpimpo: agreed.
i reffed tampa and am hoping to again this year.
i enjoyed the class and the experience of reffing that type of event. it wasn't really about the money for me as much as the experience of it all and the involvement. i learned alot.

though it was hard thankless work, i'd jump on the opportunity to do it again.

      Florida peeps...step up!!

We all see the world through our own narrow field of vision. Reffing something like an NPPL event is difficult and thankless. Everyone abuses officials; players, coaches spectators, everyone. They never believe that a refr has seen something they did not. At the end of the day no one other than event staff goes out of their way to thank officials.

Both of you fellows go ahead and ref a day. I don't think we will be reading the same stuff you are tossing out now.

and i do thank refs after ALL the tournaments i've played in - even the NPPL event. i am grateful for their service, but i also feel they could make better calls.

i understand that their job cannot be fun, but, like i said, some of their calls are rather screwed up. that's just the event i was in - i'm sure the refs are 8 times better at other events

I think you get paid $80 a day or event and a "free" hotel room. I'd say you pay in welts though. I'm sure if that's accurate. I had a friend go ref in denver last year and I think thats what he said.

I took one of the classes, and have reff'd a major event (for Montana, that is) and some of what is in the course I don't agree with. But their good courses nontheless, especially since most fields here don't have regular reffing clinics.

yea, i am talking about this event. even though we get completely schooled almost all day, i do feel some of the refs calls really interfered with the little chance we had of winning more games.

btw....were you at that event?? if so, who are you??

it's not those kind of calls - a hit is a hit.

it's the calls that our players got pulled for while i witnessed other teams do the same thing.

I've been a head ref at a bunch of tournaments. From Livelys Masters to Randy Baxters Indoor Championships. I love the big name teams. I'm sure they love me right back .

I've seen some blatant cheating and pulled a bunch of guys. They usually bellyache and whine, but when they are done, I just ask them if they're done and they usually say yes and walk off.

Had a guy at a tournament slap my clipboard out of my hand and call me a few really choice words for pulling him. I just picked my board up, gave him a -50 unsportsman and look at him. He slapped my clipboard out of my hand again and I did the same thing.
We went that route for 4 consecutive slaps and pick ups. In the end his team had a -200 pts for that game and penalized right out of the finals.

I love reffing, the pen is truly mightier than the sword!

I was at that event and it was not as bad as a later one. But if you don't like it- step up.
Elpimpo has tried which is more than most have done.

I question anyones veracity that claims they get shot more in rec ball than tournament reffing. That crap always seems to fly off of air bunkers right to where you are standing- no matter where you stand.

I am a firm believer in well trained refs but also a sufficient number of reffs. I don't believe six refs can control a 7man game. The NPPL is working hard to roundup trained reffs- that is why they are advertising. I believe they are also getting signed comitments to make all the schedule.

It is better that people think your a dumb@$$ then for you to open your mouth and confirm it.

                          Reffing has to start somewhere...

Just because you have taken a class doesn't mean you are going to get used at an event. I would assume that there is testing done at the end of the class to determine whether or not a player has displayed that he is competent.

You also need to be well versed in the rulebook of the orginization you are reffing for. Nppl is different than PSP etc.

To those who complain about reffing I offer this challenge. Put up, or shut up. Put on the gear, reff the event, dodge the paint, catch the cheaters, make all of the right calls, tolerate the abuse, and then come back and complain about classes.

Until then you ignorance is just out of this world.

To those of you who do reff, thank you. thank you for doing the most difficult job on the field and tolerating the ingrates.

Amen... playing at Chicago PSP I am tight against a "crackpipe" bunker. A ball sneaks through and I hear it crack, I turn my hopper and see an obvious big hit - ref 2 feet from me. I know I'm out, I know the rules say I'm out but I decide to take a chance. I look at him and ask "does that count" he tells me "I don't know". Another ref comes tearing down the sideline - I have not wiped thsi on the bunker or fired a shot, avoiding penalties. "does that cuont" "I don't know" "Can I play" "Sure" I was like so I went back to and had a great game.. coming off the field after being called a live player by a conferance of four refs and making no attempt to hide the hit - in fact making sure they knew about it my team captain looks at me "oh, you out?" "no" "wipe that off now..". Trained refs? Great idea.

sorry to all who think im wrong but that was just my obversation i havent had the chance to ref a major tourney like nppl or psp or xpsl. when i reffed at the last tourney my team went to, all of my hits were unintentional unlike the rec ballers who always seem to shoot me 4-5 times until i start yelling at them that im a ref i have no gun!!
