Just shoot both. After you do that you can tell us how much better the DM3 was.

Go with a matrx without a dought, you can find them used on online forums( pbnations has a bunch, here, matrix owners) You can pick one up for around 300 with eyes, new feedneck, and maybe a new tirgger, but the stock one is very nice. Ions...........are ions....they need tons of upgrades to be considered a liget marker and the ions stock parts, trigger, feedbeck, asa, reg arent great. Matrixes are out of the box markers ready to mow faces. Ions need a new trigger to get a good rythem going, the feedneck cant even support a Halo. Go with a matrix, they are quailty, speed, accuaracy all in one, and have a long line of good history. God forbid their effiecency, but pick up an evolve gold bolt, or the x-93 and you got one kick *** marker.

                    I've never shot a DM3

so I won't/can't comment on its ability as a paintball marker.

I own an ION. Now, it's got very little left of the marker that is actually from the original. I will challenge all of those that believe it to be a cheap piece of plastic. If you equate a plastic body cover as the gun being plastic, well you obviously only shoot what you talk your parents into buying. The frame is aluminum, the breech, firing chamber, and donut are aluminum. Even the barrel is made of a metal like substance

Yes, the stock board is capped at 17 BPS, but since there isn't a tournament around that lets you go over 15.4 BPS, 17 seems a bit excessive. The marker is light weight and quiet. It's electronic with eyes. It's accuracy is as good as your paint to bore match, which last I checked was the same for every other marker out there.

Find me another gun out of the box at $200 that will shoot at 17 BPS with eyes. Do you want a negative? It's a pain in the butt to clean. Undue 3 screws slide the main body up, being careful of the board, then slide the body off. The rest is simple, but you won't be cleaning the bolt in the middle of the game. Luckily, the eye system is pretty good. Only other negative I see to it, it's not a Mag!

For the price, it's hard to beat. I've shot Angels and other high-end guns, including nice Mags and the ION will keep up for a lot less. It's not going to exceed those markers, but it will keep up.

That pretty much sums it up right there for the Ion actually. A wonderful value for the money if you don't go upgrade crazy on it. With the Ion, as soon as you start adding up the ups, the price rises pretty damn fast, quickly getting into the realm of other markers like Defiant2's, and Other similar markers.

Now I've seen fully upped DM3's go for around $300 shipped.

Back to the original question, if I were going out to buy myself a backup marker, I'd choose an Ion. For $200, it's hard to beat what you get. But if I were going out to buy a primary marker, one that I would be putting very heavy milage on, I'd chose the Matrix.
