    Introduction and a dilemma...

Greetings everyone. Been reading the AO forums for a few weeks now, but this (obviously) is my first post. So, let me introduce myself quick, and then I'll move on to my question.

My name is Memnock. Yes, I know that's my InterNick, but I've had it for so long, people actually call me that in the Walking world, and in normal conversation. It's how I'm known on my team, in every game I play, on every message board I'm a part of, and it's also on my jersey. I've been playing paintball for over 15 years, and have been shooting an Automag for the last 7 of those years (The same Automag for all those years - my serial# is 21xxx... Good old AGD). I play for a Minnesota team called Fatal Exception and we are doing our best to promote local interest in both rec and tournament Paintball.

I'd also like to say that, in reading the forums for the last few weeks, I've discovered that you all seem to be a great bunch of people with a lot of valuable information and opinions to share; I'm happy to join you all, and hope I can contribute.

But, before I get to the contributing part... gimme gimme gimme!
I need advice. Here's the situation. I love my mag. A lot. I've never wavered in that, despiste the fact that my entire team shoots 'cockers (Then again, I have more years in paintball than all of the rest of them combined, so what do they know! ). But I'd also like to be able to compete a bit better with the electro markers out there. So, I've picked three, possibly four, upgrade paths. Let's hear your opinions and help me choose between them:

    1. I buy the Hyperframe and upgrade to the Retro Valve (remember, my valve is OLD. It may not have exact enough tolerances and my bolt may be eaten alive by the Hyperframe.) That comes to roughly $600.00.

    2. Or, do I take that money and pick up a mid-level electo, like one of the nice new Impulses? The downside of which, of course, is that it's not a 'mag, and not made by AGD.

    3. Or, do I send in my valve and that money and get an E-mag? (Which, remember, will come back all nice and shiney new, but installed with my valve created in the days before electricity)

    4. Or, do you guys have a better idea? Throw out anything. I'm open to other suggestions.

    So, that's my dilemma.

I'd also like to get some Trigger frame reviews. Basically looking at the new Intelliframe and the Hyperframe. I don't need them compared to each other, just general reviews. If you've owned one or the other, let me know what you think of them and make some comparisons to what you've used in the past.

Thanks for any replies! It's great to be here, and I look forward to talking with all of you in the future.

    Shout out to DJSolid!

    See you on the field!

Well, here's a welcome from the local PostWhore...

Hi! I don't feel like saying the usual corny welcome so I'll just say hi...

    I'd do #4...

Maybe hang around a while with your old mag and see if AGD comes out with an Xtreme Emag upgrade. That would give your emag ace and modular feed. I highly doubt that would be coming out soon though.

    another #4 possibility...

Just get a retrovalve. You probably have enough skill to take a lot of people out anyways.

Well, first of all, welcome to AO, you fellow old timer! I've been playing about 15-16 yrs myself.

As for your questions, I'd start off with buying a Retro Valve first, rather than going Retro & Hyperframe at the same time. See how you like the Retro first. Take it one step at a time.

Just a RetroValve alone will boost your ROF quite a bit, and you may very well be satisfied with the performance you get with just that, rather than spending more $$ on getting a Hyperframe also. If you do end up getting a Hyperframe, remember that you'll be giving up the reactivity of the RetroValve. You can trade in that ancient valve of yours to AGD and get a Retro for $200.

The $550 E-mag conversion would leave your current valve in there. Or, you can convert to a brand spankin new E-mag by sending in your current Automag and $750.

Welcome Memnock! Thanks for being a long time customer, you sure have a delema. If your on a budget I would see if you can get a good deal on a used electro and try it out. Once you shoot whatever you get you'll have a better understanding of what type of gun to eventually upgrade to.

          Greetings Memnock,

I am from Minnesota too and play on team Throttle. Where in MN are you?

If you enjoy your mag so much, and are on a budget, maybe try to sell yours and put it towards a used emag. I have seen used emags for about the same price you would pay for the upgrade, or the retro and hyperframe. I guarantee you would be more satisfied with the AGD emag over the hyperframe/booya setup. If you have never shot an emag and are interested in trying one out, and are ever near SYO in Blaine, let me know. I can get my hands on a regular emag and I have the newer version(SFL Emag). If you get this tonight, there will be a bunch of us at SYO tommorrow around 12:00(noon) for practice. You are more than welcome to show up and play with us.

a retro valve and aftermarket triggerframe is all you need to compete with those electro's. I have two guns, one with a z-grip and retro and the other with THE ALMIGHTY Intelliframe. I have pics of them on here somewhere although they are a bit outdated. If you do decide to go electro you should probably skip over the whole mid level electro section. By the time you get through with them you would have spent the $1,000 you could of used to get your choice electro. Stock 2k2 angels are about $950 and E-mags are about $1,000. E-mags have the exact same performance as the sfl or extreme, except for the ACE. But honestly, now that the HALO is out I don't see that being a problem. The biggest problem will be breaks down the barrel due to brittle paint. Tom is working on a fix for that, or so I believe.

Taking mags apart is fun, its even more fun when you don't know what you're doing

              Welcome Memnock,

You will find a lot of suggestions here, but as a long time classic valve user, let me give you my hard earned lessons.

The upgrade path can be tried, first a retrovalve, New its 265.00 plus, then a new grip frame $100-250 depending on choice so now we are at 350-500. This will make an enjoyable and very playable gun.

However, you can find used Emags for 600-700 here. That gets you what is becoming recognized as the best system on the market. Even if something is wrong, AGD will help you fix it for a minimal charge, and my experience here is that so will everyone on the board. If you buy from another member here, chances are you will get it exactly as advertised. (I paid 675 for mine in November). The Emag is by far the best gun I have ever shot, and from the factory offers the widest range of adjustability I have ever seen. The only change I've made for an aftermarket part is a different barrel to match my regular paint closer. The unique thing about the Emag over other electros is that it will work even when the batteries fail, in that mode it is an RT.

If I were you, I would avoid the headaches of the upgrades and just go Emag!

              Just my 2 cents.

Good Luck in the quest, and keep your head down.

              Bill

The Impulse is a very good choice. For about 450 dollars you can get a base Impulse with a verticle regulator. Upgrade to an aftermarket adjustable trigger and a delrin bolt and you will be truly amazed. For the money you just cant beat the Impulse. (No I dont own any stock in the company... If you are going to stay with AGD then I would sell the old gun and buy an RT Pro with the intelliframe. They are going for around 575 online.

You've been using the same gun for too long to change it. Unless it's worn to the point of being broken - leave it. You know it. It's that whole, if it ain't broke concept.

I agree with Tom and some of the others when they suggest buying a used E-Mag.

Welcome to AO! You have come to the right place for sure. I would take the advice of BWAITES and a few others and sell your current mag and get an Emag. I did just that recently, and will never regret doing it. AGD has the best products and customer service available. NEVER let ANYONE tell you any different. Good luck with whatever marker you decide on. See you around I am sure....

                          Memnock, welcome to AO.

i would keep your present gun if for nothing else just because you have owned it for 9 years. plus you now that mag and it could be a back up gun if you ever needed it.

i would save up and buy a new Emag. The used ones are just as goos but i just have this thing about buying things new.(even thow i baught a used AutomagRT in december.) when i baught the rt i kept my ariginal 68automag that i baught some 7 or so years ago just for sentamental sake. plus if you stay with AGD you now how the company does buisness and you already now how to work on the valve.

Best of luck with what ever you do.
Sorry for the spelling. Im still working on it.

                            Description of my baby...

I've been hoping to get a good digital pic of my 'mag, but in lieu of that, for the purposes of this thread, I'll just write up a description, so you all will know what you may be asking me to get rid of.

                            So here goes:

Standard Automag Valve assembly (SN: 21xxx)
                            Black Shocktech Charger
                            Red anno KAPP Tourney cap

Black MiniMag p/f hopper left main body
                            Black anno Freak barrel back
Red anno 14" Freak barrel front
Red anno KAPP Drop-Zone II drop forward

                            Black 12v Revvy

                            So... can you picture that?

Hopefully, I'll get a picture up here soon.

Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it!

Ahhh, I knew you were a thinking man when you described your red and black gun. Best colors for a MiniMag, by far!

I would simply go with just a ReTro valve, you can easily match the electro rates of fire, and never have to worry about shootdown. You already have a Benchy frame (which is made to AGD specs BTW) and 12v Revvy so feeding and firing is not a worry
