Rotational bolt? That is what the Southern Pnumatics Pheonix had. Dont know how well it works, but its rare.

I don't know anything about the Pheonix has/had. But my personal idea, and the one I think mikebridge is trying to convey, is more of a sleeve with 2 openings to allow balls to come in, and then an opening at the back of some sort to allow air to push the ball out.

Question: Does the epic use a hammer to open the valve? I can't find any schematics.

yep, i have a Nova it pretty much works the same way as what youre saying, with a sliding trap door over the feed hole, but that sliding piece of metal is the barrel. contrary to popular belief, it actually works pretty well. its reliable (to me it has been). few moving parts=less problems. every once in a while i get a leak, but its fixable. it sounds wierd when you shoot, sort of like a wet fart as some of my friends call it. now its just my backup gun so when i dont have HPA for my mag i just use CO2 with my nova. like someone said, its more of a novelty than a competition piece, but i like it. ive only seen one in the 4 years ive been playing, and its mine!

You can dee a pic of the CAD plan for the pheonix here: http://haveblue.org/tech/phoenix/

and here is a write up that Punisher did on Mcarterbrown.com:
The trigger is connected to a 2-way valve, similar in layout to a cocker's 4-way but much sturdier and using teflon rings in place of O-rings. It's essentially a pin style On-Off.

There's a regulator at the rear, it's what the Sheridan Equalizer's is based on as well as the RG-1.

When you pull the trigger, regulated gas passes thru the 2-way and into an intermediate chamber with a spring return plunger. This allows the pulse to 'get a head of steam' before venting out the barrel.

The same gas is used to charge one side of a spring return ram (in the right side plate) that closes the rotating breech, rotating it forward at which time the pulse from the reg is vented thru the rotating breech pushing the ball down the barrel.

When you let off the trigger everything resets.

Neat idea......full of holes. First off the trigger it pretty horrible, very stiff and sticky. That could be ignored if not for the one glaring problem. Since there's no delay from the breech closing and the pulse firing, most of the time the ball gets chopped coming in or exiting the breech. As well, the breech is a bit over an inch in diameter with a .700" bore right thru it. As the first ball in the stack drops in, so does half of the next one so you're guaranteed a chop almost every time.

Some came with a mechanized feed limiter that only allowed one ball in at a time......mostly....when it wasn't pulverizing the balls it was holding back. I have one with and one without.

The premise has great potential but wasn't developed enough to be released as it is
Very similar to what was being talked about, or at least as I saw :)

ok, i was jus ganna go back to the roating breech. ok thing about this, the breech would have 2 holes, all across from each other.so then say the breech spins inside the body, then it will start with one hole lined up with feed port, so then a ball it fed into the gun, then wen the shot is taken say they breech spins 90, and a burst of air is released from behind to shoot the ball, and the breech spins another 90, and loads a ball through the other hole. so i think if done right this would make for a very fast cycle, so a lot of cycles per second could happen. it might not be the most accurate, but fast as hell.

I was looking at my drawings the other day and got to thinking, it would also be pretty easy to create modules for a vert, warp, or even a bottom feed. Damn, I wish I could mill.
