Ban Policy Manifesto
1. The official Forum Rules thread should be updated to reflect the policies that moderators will enforce.
2. Moderators should make every attempt to abide by these policies, providing warnings and bans as dictated by the rules they set.
3. In cases where a user breaks a rule which is not stated in the rules thread, the user should be warned and the rule added to the rules thread, except in cases of serious offenses where the user must be removed for the good of the community (though the rule should still be added immediately).
EDIT: Manifesto ends after line 3. The following is just my commentary.
I am not opposed to moderation, and at times I even feel it should be stricter - I just dislike the uneven application of the rules and the application of rules which are never stated, and I feel I am not alone. I understand that AO is a family-oriented, work-safe board officially operated by a company, and that certain topics are not appropriate here. I also understand that the moderators don't have all the time in the world to dedicate to this, and that they are only human. Perhaps additional moderators or a more organized system of warnings and bans could be added, but clearly the actual implementation of the rules is the responsibility and right of the moderators. Finally, I understand that this poll is in no way binding for the moderators, and that this is not a democracy; I simply want to determine if I am alone in believing this, and hopefully send a message to the moderators that we aren't merely a vocal minority.
Please don't debate specific instances of bans here. This is about the ban policies and rules in general, not any specific user or incident. EDIT: Please try not to bring discussion from the other thread into this one; I'd rather this thread remain about the ban policy and rules and not get all the other tangents and incident-specific issues dragged into it.
Moderators, I understand that you are trying to keep this issue confined to a single thread, but I feel this thread has the potential to offer insights and discussion that the other does not. I assure you my intent here is not to be disruptive, but merely to provide a way to gauge the opinions of users about ban policies and forum rules.
