these are my two options for carry when i get my permits in a few months. i want to get a polymer gun in .40 S&W and I'm leaning toward the XD, but I'm not going to have the money for a while, and Ive got my suppressor on the list before that.

Wow. We shoot a 5inch and a 4inch XD, both in 40. Im looking to buy a 5 soon.

The subcompact is a nice piece. Couldn't believe the ammo capacity they get out of a gun the size of my hand.

There have been a lot of guns that were going to "overcome" the Glock. The Smith and Wesson Sigma (that was so close it actually could interchange with a Glock frame), the XD, the Kahr, the S+W MP. The key was a lot of great manufacturers have taken a shot at the Glock and seem to have fallen short.
I am planning on picking up a G19 sometime if I ever get around to concealed carrying. I picked up this little bugger for about $199 despite all the trash talk about them - simply cant beat that price for a pistol that holds 14+1 .40s&w and keeps groups under 6" at 10yds. Hasn't jammed once and is easy to see why glock sued them for this one. I'd reccomed this to anyone looking for a plastic plinker or cheap light carry piece.

I could catch some heat for this... but:

Legume, I wouldn't cadrry a .380 unless it was my only option. Especially with an equal capacity small 1911 next to it.
.380 is slower, smaller and half the power of a 9mm.

EDIT: Sorry legume, I just noticed that it throws 9mm makarovs. A 'lil better than .380
Anyways, 'ur missin a round in your 1911 mags.

First off, I only use "plastic" pistols so flame suit on. The Glock is an awsome gun, but for me there is just something uncomfortable about it. I just don't like the feel in my hand. My favorite is the FNP, the P99 is a close second, if it had an external hammer they'd be tied. I'm also really likeing the new Sig and will probably have to get one of those soon. However alot of the guys on the local SWAT teams swear by thier Glocks. Personal prefferance I guess.

I got to fondle a new Wilson Combat ADP recently. Seems like a fine little pistol, IMO.
A little pricey... but whad'ya expect from Wilson Combat?

I really like Glocks, purely functional at a good price. I have a G31 in .357 Sig. Awesome round but expensive. Hope you enjoy it!

Watch out, newer US made sigs suck. Nothing like the old German ones. The quality went into the toilet when they started picking up all the gov't contracts.

they are cut down 7 round mags so they will fit in the officer model, so they retain the extra hole but only hold 6 rounds. I'm confident that my 9x18mm pistol will mess up people plenty when carrying the 1911 isn't an option.

I've not noticed that, quality is still top notch on the new ones I've played with.

I'm a sig armorer, and the ones I worked on are noticable deficient.

At least they still rust like the old sigs Dont' those guys ever learn.

                          Keep in mind I'm a big sig fan too. I've got a factory nickel 226, a well-worn 228, and the 229.

I guess I have a lot to learn. I'm still a year away from being able to get my carry permit. I'm not buying a pistol until then. I was basically considering a Glock without any doubts just for reliability's sake. Why all the hate lol, they seem like a great product.

Also, any suggestions as far as what one should get for a purely personal defense purpose? I was thinking a G23 since it's compact but still fires a pretty decent round. Then again, I'm a beginner as far as pistols go. Not to hijack the thread, but any suggestions on a low cost, easy to maintain sidearm for a beginner?

dont worry pneumagger i had one in 9mm and i liked it except the wife didnt want it around because of no saftey. it didnt rattle like a glock and it felt solid where the glocks feel like there coing to fall apart. i know glocks are reliable but i cant get over the rattle they make. i like my kimber and my springfield 1911. my next purchase will probably be a sig but i havent decided on what model just the caliber, 40.
