Need help picking out a BIG rifle

Ok, I had a Ruger Number 1 in my hands last weekend that I passed on. Mostly because 416 factory ammo is roughly ten dollars a shot.

I had an A-bolt Browning (with the BOSS Compensator) in 375 H+H in my hands this weekend and passed because I really liked the Ruger Number 1.

Now, I realize that this are way overkill for anything I am going to hunt around here, or likely in North America. I have a 270 that should drop anything that I can get a good shot at.

That being said I want a SERIOUS rifle. So I make the mistake of asking AO.

Just for the record, 50BMG is out. I can't find a gun made by a serious manufacturer for it that weighs less than about 25lbs.

    Considerations:

Ammo must be at least reasonably commercially available at a reasonable cost.

    It need to be carriable.

Recoil is of some concern, though I realize full well nothing in this range is going to be light.

    Thoughts?

Try taking a look at AR-30s from armalite. 300 WSM packs a heck of a punch for a reasonable price, or you could step up to 338 Lapua, but theyre not much cheaper than 50 cal rounds.

Let me redefine reasonable as being in the $5 a shot range. This is not some plinking gun that I am going to cycle 100 rounds through in a day anyways.

The .416 just annoyed me at cost.

Why not just use .308? Why do you need more?

When you hear "Great Big Rifle that's not a .50 BMG", you ought to automatically think "Weatherby".

Weatherby MkV Bolt Action chambered .460 Weatherby Magnum

                Rifle Cost = ~$2,500 new

Ammo Cost = ~$5.50 per round

It will be a damned fine rifle, packing one hell of a wallop.

A cheaper option both rifle and round wise, would be a Remington 700 Deluxe chambered in 300 Winchester Magnum

                Rifle Cost = ~$900

Ammo Cost = ~$1.50 per round

That will also be a damned fine rifle (I own a 700 Deluxe in .243 and it's a dandy), and both the rounds and the rifle are quite a lot cheaper than the much more exotic Weatherby.

Both will serve you well for basically a lifetime if you take care of them.

Why is 338 Lapua too small? Are you trying to shoot down the moon?

Its not. The 30-06 and 7MM are too small for what I want, frankly my 270 will do everything they can. The 375 intrigues me There are others that do as well. I have a 300 Win Mag I can use anytime I want it so I was looking to go a bit more aggressive than that.

                          Just a two cent-er.

My in-laws have been through a whole set of ultra-mags and WSSMs. Last time we talked about them, there was only one left between four guns. They had been using them for elk hunting, no one thought they were anything special, except they were especially sharp in recoil, compared to the larger cased magnums.

If you like the no. 1 and want to put (little) holes in (thick) steel, look at the 204 Ruger.

338 Lapua puts out a 250 grain bullet at roughly 2850 FPS

The 375 puts out a 270 grain bullet slightly faster (about 2870) and a 300 grain at about 2750

Close. Might have to consider it.
