Armalite makes the AR-30. They are wonderfully accurate no-frills rifles that are, for their performance, the best deal out there IMO.
You can have them chambered in .308, .300 win mag, and .338 Lapua. All are very accurate rounds.

I have few rifles currently. Only a Winchester Model 94, an SKS, and an AR15.
When time and funds allow, I will be adding:
Armalite AR10(T) with an SWR Omega 30 ($3500 w/out optics)
Armalite AR-30 in .338 Lapua with an AAC Titan ($3500 w/out optics) <--- the silencer costs as much as rifle
I may just get one or the other and work on making the rifles better instead of shooting stock.

On that note, I really only need one or two more pistols before focusing on rifles.

Black hills makes 300 gr sierra matchkings in .338 lapua. Theyre a bit longer than the standard .338 rounds so they need a 1:10" twist rate, but everything Ive found says they get anywhere from 2800-2850 fps and stays supersonic out past 2000m. Found em for 900 bucks for a case of 200 at warrior-gear

I guess a Weatherby is too traditional? I don't understand the lust that some folks have for the new exotic rounds (not saying that's for sure the case here, just putting it out there).

The .338 Lapua is a fine round, but you say that a 250 gr bullet at 2850 ft/s isn't enough energy.

Ok, then how about a 450 gr bullet at 2400 ft/s? That's 28% more energy for roughly the same size rifle (the round itself is a lot bigger though).

If that's still not enough, that same .460 wtby round can be had with a 500 gr bullet pushed at over 2600 ft/s. That's 67% more energy than the Lapua.

Unless you step up to a .50 BMG, I'm not sure how you can find more wallop in a rifle cartridge.

Are there some other parameters you've not listed, that a traditional hunting rifle cannot fulfill? Or is it just not cool enough (which is as good a reason as any, I'm just wondering)?

No, I have not narrowed it down too far yet. If I had to pick one out today it would be the Ruger No1 (single shot, falling breech) in 375 H+H but I would opt for the stainless.

I would prefer it lean towards a traditional style firearm over some of the new "tactical" rifles. Since I may use it to hunt (and would jump at the chance to go into the rockies for elk) I prefer it be carriable.

I can cope with the single shot attributes, I will carry a 10MM as back-up anyways.

It seems to be that in traditional rounds I am left with some of the extreme Weatherby magnums, the 416, some 458s etc. The recoil tables on the 458s worry me a bit.

I looked at some of the Lapua range statistics and it really doesn't seem to do any better than the 375 H+H. Drop is very similiar with equal bullet weights, speed is very similiar, energy is very similiar. I can buy 375 H+H factory ammo from almost any source in the world.

I was in the store tonight and spent a lot of money

Bought a Glock 20 with intents to pick up the 40 compensated conversion barrel to shoot. Love the feel of the full size Glock for a range gun and love the 10MM as a back-up when hunting.

Ordered a TC Pro Hunter stainless edition with a 26" 375 H+H barrel. The little gun may be light for such a heavy load but I'm hoping the recoil reduction stock does its job. Have a feeling I might have to have a mercury tube put in to absorb some though, we'll see.
