Yeah a lot of people are not ready to give up almost everything.
And it could/would be a HUGE change.. no cars... no electricity.. no restaurants or grocery stores...

It is a bummer in a way. Because we did build a ''half good society life style''. But so many people just wanted more.. and some people wanted power and control...
Some people say humans always ''want more''.... maybe it is true.
Bummer that we (humans) are destroying a lot in the way...
This planet might not take it anymore and continue with all the floods to teach humans a lesson

Actually at this point I'm using such a justification in a lot of things. Whats worth more, these ten pieces of paper or that 308 with a case of ammo for instance .

funny thing is, your spending of those 10 pieces of paper keeps the value of them stable.

Money has no real value, it is just a bartering lubricant. It eases transactions by allowing a a good or service to be represented by a few pieces of paper. Your service at work earns you that paper, you give the paper to someone else for a good....this replaced trading goods, or working for goods. Money is only assigned a value when it is exchanged, hence your spending of those 10 bills gives the next person an expectation of value when they go to spend them. People who save forget what it took to earn those bills, so they are more likely to accept less....this is why when a country goes into a recession, the worst thing to do is stop spending money....even though it seems like the smart thing to do for self preservation.

thats not true !!!! They know EXACTLY what needs to be done & don't have the backbone to do it , and really THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US LITTLE FOLK , They ( WE ) will be still be buying fuel for thier limo when it's 10$ a gallon , They will STILL be eating steak when we are eating beans out of a can with a white wrapper , They will STILL be living in the house on the hill when we are on the street

I'm getting to the point of acknowledging I have 40 acres, stocking up on manual gardening tools and seeds for next year while provisioning for the winter with canned goods. Its too late in the year to put in a wood heater for the entire house, though I am keeping wood stocked for the fireplace. A few books on the subjects (because instant internet knowledge may not be available) are kept on hand as well.

I'm not as concerned about fuel - either its available or it isn't. I'm concerned about the value of the dollar (I'm thinking of the great collapse of the Russian economy) and wondering if at this point its not better to invest in durable goods for barter should the time come to it.

unless you incorporate forced air/liqid heating into the design of the fireplace. (pass air/fluid through the brick and mortar around the fireplace, and distribute it through the house just like normal heat) but that only works for big fireplaces where the entire wall is brick for a large enough surface area to accomplish anything.

I understand that idea - I'm not sure if I am totally in agreement with it with a well vented / drafted fireplace but I have heard it from enough sources to give it some credibility. Obviously I would find out when I tried. However, if the option is one warm room vs 0 warm rooms in the event of an emergency I'm going to take the one .

True true, i was just letting you know, and it's been tested and has been shown but as you said there are ways to make it more efficient, but i would gladly take one warm room over none as well. Too bad i live in a dorm.

Yep buy guns and if you have guns buy ammo!!! I prefer the firearm of our enemy AK47. Easy to fire, easy to clean, easy to work on, just add a little oil once in a while and your shooting. Hmmm This sounds familar doesn't it.

Ehh, I prefer a good bolt action in a common caliber - 30/06 / 308 etc. I give 308 the edge as a military cartridge. Its not like I have any intent of putting up armed resistance.

Though I did hear a very valid point in discussion. A 22 - ammo is incredibly plentiful and cheap. Will kill most any prey animal you want for food with a decent shot. You can carry thousands of shots with very little weight.
