Thank you so much Mr. Kaye for answering. I think it's awesome that you actually respond to these things.

But one question remains: Just how powerful is 180,000 PSI? (even if that is not the pressure it is being released at).

This post is going to be a bit... odd.. As your question doesn't exactly have an answer. However, it does indicate what you're really trying to ask.

Well this crosses into the area of "numbers to big for people to wrap their head around" comparing your 180pounds, a weight you can't even put on a single square inch without discomfort, to the 180,000 pounds, per square inch, is hard to handle.

it's just 100 times more force than a co2 bottle is rated for.

It's like having a SD40 locomotive sitting on your thumb. (it's 360,000lbs... your thumb is around two square inches..) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_SD40 The real problem there, is a locomotive on a 2in/sq platform would crush the plastform ;-) not just your thumb.

at 180,000psi, materials we normally consider very hard, and not very plastic, start behaving like plastic.

Honestly, it's a point where I need to break out math to really come to grips on it.

How else can we put this in perspective. 180,000psi is well beyond anything you experience in every day life. The highest pressures you might be around are the fuel injection pressures of a common rail diesel engine. Those are in the 20-50,000psi range.

I suppose we're back around to the original question. How much power does 180,000psi have? It all depends on how much area it's working on. The shoebox compressor transforms a little more than 55lb of force into 4500psi. (mind there's around 100lbs of force on the carriage in total.. so don't get your fingers in there... and here's hoping my maths right)

Whether you like it or not, none of this matters unless a ship has been expressly denied access upon request. Had it actually happened, I'm sure would have been covered to no end by the news and I'm also sure you would have brought up by now. In that case, you might have a point, but as it stands now this is a bunch of political BS with no substance.

I think you have me confused with someone who gives a crap about the Presidential position and whichever face happens to currently be in it. My goal here was simply calling you out on your childish post title(which you have used more than once if memory serves me correctly).

Then I was forced to follow up by disputing the whole drama over "Bush suspended Jones, Obama must not care because he hasn't". Somehow in your mind, by pointing out that it is a bunch of useless banter designed to waste peoples time and divert their attention to a non-issue, I suddenly became an Obama fanboy; which I assure you I am far from.

If anything, you should be complaining that the parties responsible for the spill/cleanup havent already paid for those boats to be relocated into the gulf and also fulfilled all required paper work as soon as they realized they had a long term issue on their hands.

I question how effective these ships would be in the current situation, since this is not a localized surface spill, but is spread over an area as it rises to the surface and diffused even further by undersea and surface currents. Couple that with upcoming tropical storms and these ships will play an even more futile role.

Just to clear something up....who is this "they" which get this so-called gold mine?
