Edit: Who knows what we are doing in Afghanistan? For a hint look at the amount of Opium they exported prior to our invasion and now. It went from 10% of the worlds supply to over 80% of the worlds supply in ten years.

What happened and this was coming from the horses mouth, the man who designed the building had stated, due to the buildings center which was basically a hallow shell that consisted of elevator shafts, stair wells, fresh air ducks, water pipes, heating and cooling vents and the main beams caring much of the load.
Once the plane hit, the inferno went up and down the center of the building. Weakening the main support beams on every floor above and about 30 stories below the impact site. The searing heat caused the medal to lose most of it's strength and due to that, the main support beams couldn't hold the weight and caused the collapsed.
