Whats a good first car or truck?

Well after agreeing on no Christmas gifts, or birthday gifts and the agreement on me paying most of the car insurance and the parents will help on the payments on the car itself, my dad said I can get me a car. So now what to get? Whats a good used car that goes for like $6000-$9000?(hopefully with some money for audio left over which I need opinions on too)

if you live somewhere that it snows, get a front wheel drive...i bought a firebird in september, and really enjoyed it until it started snowing...of course..as soon as spring rolls around i'll be fine again and forget all about it : D

i would look into a kia rio, which sounds like a bit of a ricer but is actually nice for the $ you put into it. they go new for a bit less than 8thou new base so used you could get a decent stereo also. for speakers although unpopular with many, sony xplods are a great value for ampage, and if your looking for real quality audio jbl makes great great gear. as far as a nicer car, i have seen 00altimas and 00 jettas go for well under 10k and are both excellent choices IMHO

well, i say buy an older crappier car as a first car. It really saves on the insurance.

You could get a nice low mileage 1990s F-150 or ranger, or the similiar sized chevy n dodge trucks with that.

You could also get a nice tacoma or a smaller truck.

civics are always great economy cars for teenagers.

I personally would not buy a new car that is 8 grand. I think you can buy a much higher quality used car. Then you don't have to worry about alluminum and plastic, you can rely on good old cast iron.

            go to www.cars.com and search!

It's a good bet that a sports car, SUV, or truck and that you are teen driver will bring in higher insurance rates. It would be better to get a econo car like a civic. They bring in a lower insurance rate. Trucks and SUV's are usually a bad choice for new drivers. They drive different, meaning that the feel of the steering reacts differently from sedans because of the higher center mass. Another reason is the gas factor. You will be filling up more with a truck or suv. Average highway MPG for any truck/suv is around 20. Compacts can get 30-35. If I were you, i'd get a civic or something similar. Then get a truck/suv when you can afford one.

older, less sport, but not too old. It'd be more affordable that way... unless your parents promised to pay for your insurance rates... then go for a brand spanking new ferrari

I would recomend getting either an A2 GTi or an A3 GTi. The older series is a bit easier to work on yourself and I just like the body style a bit more. If you did end up getting an A3(newer style) I would try and stay away from the VR6 engine. While this engine would be the engine that I'd want in mine they're a bit harder to work on if you don't what you're doing as well as they come with a higher insurance rate. If you get a later model VW you should be able to pick up a real nice one for easily 4k and then spend the rest on stereo, tires, rims, ect. VW's are just all around great cars. If they're maintained well they'll run forever and get great gas mileage. Not to mention if you have any problems you can just go to

Thanks for all the replies still looking, but I got plenty of time a few more months and Ill be able drive and get a job to pay the payments. It seems that the parents changed their minds and decided to pay for the insurance and Ill just take the payments on the car. So far the only good deal Ive seen is a silver automatic 96 Honda Accord with 4 door but with 100,000 miles on it. The body has the usual few dents and scratches but the interior is flawless. The dealer said it would be up for sale and has VTEC all for $6000...does that seem fair?

Sound like a good price. With the mileage over 100k, you could probably negotiate a lower price.
